With less than a week until Nintendo’s big presentation for the Nintendo Switch 2, it seems like a new leak or rumor emerges every day. However, instead of the latest news coming from some shady Reddit or X account, this time it appears that Nintendo themselves may have unintentionally revealed new games coming to the console.

Last Thursday, Nintendo announced during a special video presentation that both the original Nintendo Switch and its upcoming successor will support a new Virtual Card system, allowing players to share their digital games with friends. Alongside the announcement, Nintendo updated its website with a page explaining how the new feature works. But someone at the company may have slipped up, as the bottom of the page revealed information about a previously unannounced line of games for the Nintendo Switch 2.
The website stated:
“Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games and Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games can only be loaded on a Nintendo Switch 2 system. To move virtual game cards between two systems, you must pair the systems via local wireless and an internet connection, but only when pairing the systems for the first time. Up to two systems total can be linked per Nintendo Account.”

The key takeaway here is the mention of “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” games, which has sparked speculation across the gaming community. The big question: what exactly are these Switch 2 Edition titles?

Some believe these will be upgraded versions of existing Nintendo Switch games that struggled to run on the original hardware. The Switch was often criticized as underpowered during the latter years of its lifespan. With the new console launching this year, Nintendo may be planning to give these titles a second life—but whether that includes all games or just select ones remains to be seen.
One likely scenario is that Nintendo will offer upgrades to existing Switch titles through their digital services, much like they did during the Wii U era. Back then, players could pay a small fee to upgrade their Wii Virtual Console games to Wii U versions with added features like GamePad support. Many fans now hope Nintendo will offer such upgrades for free this time around, especially since many of the original titles were purchased only a few years ago.

Nintendo is known for valuing its game library—often pricing older titles significantly higher than competitors, even for decades-old games. This trend is raising concerns that these “new” versions of Switch classics could be sold again at full retail price, frustrating fans who fear the move would mirror the worst microtransaction practices in modern gaming. Still, Nintendo is also known for surprising its audience, and many loyal fans are hopeful that the company will strike a balance between quality and value.
Whether this surprise announcement was an honest mistake or a clever marketing move to stir speculation in the final week before the big Direct, Nintendo definitely has some explaining to do.

Perhaps the Virtual Card feature was implemented to make the Switch 2 more appealing to Switch owners. Personally I’m in no hurry to upgrade, especially considering Nintendo’s recent mess ups.
