Oriental Land Company has announced plans to expand into cruise operations, marking a shift beyond its theme park business. The company confirmed on March 24, 2026, that it will establish a new subsidiary to operate Disney-branded cruise services based in Japan.
The subsidiary, Oriental Land Cruise Co., Ltd., is scheduled for establishment on April 3, 2026. It will operate under the brand Disney Cruise Line Japan and oversee future cruise operations. The move is intended to support long-term growth and diversify revenue sources.

In the notice released March 24, the company noted that it “seeks to evolve its business structure to achieve sustainable growth. To this end, the Company is working to launch Disney cruise services in Japanese fiscal year 2028 as a pillar for further growth, while pursuing continued growth for Tokyo Disney Resort®, its mainstay business.”
Planned Ship and Timeline
Construction of the first vessel is expected to begin during fiscal year 2026, which runs from April 2026 through March 2027. The company expects the vessel to be completed in fiscal year 2028. Service is scheduled to begin within the same fiscal year, which extends through March 2029.

The ship is being built by Meyer Werft in Germany. The vessel will be based on the design of the Disney Wish. The Walt Disney Company will collaborate on design and creative elements. The final design will reflect Japanese regulations and local market preferences.
Partnership Structure
Oriental Land Company operates Tokyo Disney Resort under a long-standing licensing agreement with Disney. The cruise venture will follow a similar structure.
Disney will provide intellectual property and creative input. Oriental Land Company will handle financing, ownership, and operations. This model mirrors the companies’ existing relationship in Japan’s theme park sector.

The cruise project builds on an agreement announced in 2024 between the two companies. That agreement outlined plans for a Japan-based Disney cruise ship, with service expected by 2029.
Strategic Context
The move into cruises reflects a broader strategy to expand beyond land-based attractions. Oriental Land Company has traditionally focused on theme parks and hotels. The cruise business introduces a new segment aimed at family-oriented travel.

Industry observers have noted steady growth in the Asian cruise market. Companies continue to invest in regional capacity and shorter itineraries that appeal to domestic travelers.
The planned ship is expected to operate from a Japanese homeport, likely in the Tokyo area. Specific itineraries have not yet been announced.
Outlook
Oriental Land Company stated that the financial impact of the new subsidiary will be limited in the short term. The company views the cruise business as a long-term investment.

Further details, including the ship’s name and onboard features, have not been released. Planning and development remain ongoing in coordination with Disney.
The project represents the first Disney-branded cruise operation based in Japan. It also marks a notable expansion for Oriental Land Company into maritime tourism.
