With Warner Bros. Discovery officially on the market, one of the biggest questions has been what happens to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios leadership is Paramount emerges the victor? Various reports have bounced between two extremes: rumors claiming Gunn would be fired immediately if Paramount takes over, and others insisting he would be entirely protected. Now, a new report from an industry insider seems to land somewhere in the middle — and it directly ties Paramount, James Gunn, and the broader future of the DCU together.

According to a breakdown from Matt Belloni’s What I’m Hearing column on Puck News, if the Paramount-Skydance bid succeeds, Gunn and Safran could remain in charge but with less autonomy than they currently enjoy under Warner Bros. Discovery. Paramount may want tighter oversight, new voices in the room, and a more traditional studio hierarchy shaping DC’s slate. This, however, has nothing to do with Zack Snyder.
Paramount Interest in Zach Cregger Points to a More Hands-On Studio Philosophy
Belloni’s reporting suggests Paramount executives are extremely enthusiastic about Weapons director Zach Cregger, whose most recent film delivered a strong financial win for Warner Bros. Paramount Pictures co-chair Josh Greenstein reportedly met with Cregger to discuss a film concept “set in a particular corner of the DC Universe,” and expressed strong interest in making it happen if the acquisition goes through.

If accurate, this hints at a major shift:
- Paramount may want DC to function more like a filmmaker-driven division.
- Gunn and Safran may no longer have complete creative authority over every DCU project.
- New directors — especially those with recent hits — could be given more autonomy.
This paints a picture where Gunn is not removed, but no longer all-powerful within DC Studios.
This Is Not Proof That Gunn Is Being Fired or That Zack Snyder Is Returning
Online speculation has predictably gone off the rails, with some fans claiming the Paramount-Skydance deal means James Gunn will be cast out and Zack Snyder will swoop in to reclaim DC. Let’s be clear: none of the reporting says this.

Yes, Gunn may have a boss for the first time since taking over DC Studios. Yes, Paramount may want more oversight.
But there is no credible evidence that the studio is preparing to reinstall Snyder — and there are good reasons for that.
The Snyderverse Failed to Deliver What the Studio Needed
The Snyder era ended because it wasn’t working:
Man of Steel delivered decent returns, but Batman v Superman suffered a disastrous reception and steep drop-off. Justice League — regardless of version — did not revive the brand. Under Snyder’s darker colorless approach to DC, audience division grew, merchandising dipped, and long-term franchise plans collapsed.

The DCEU never stabilized under Snyder’s direction, and over time it became clear Warner Bros. needed an entirely new strategy.
The Rumors Ignore Industry Reality
Despite that history, certain corners of the internet continue to insist that DC leadership is preparing to hand the franchise back to the person whose prior run ended with diminishing returns.

There is no industry reporting that Paramount wants this. There is no executive comment hinting in that direction.
It remains speculation fueled by online echo chambers, not anything reflected in actual studio discussions. If the sale goes through, the far more grounded scenario is simple: Gunn stays, but with oversight.
What Does This Mean for Gunn’s DCU Vision?
The rest of the Belloni report raises some important questions about the internal dynamics of the DCU moving forward. It notes that Gunn has historically taken a hands-on approach to scripts and story direction even on projects he isn’t writing or directing. Some industry chatter claims that directors experienced rewrites or delays as a result.

If Paramount is eager to empower a new wave of filmmakers — particularly someone like Zach Cregger, who just delivered a major win — Gunn may find himself needing to compromise in ways he hasn’t under the current structure.
How Deep Could Paramount’s Influence Go?
Cregger’s pitch reportedly sits in a “particular corner” of the DC Universe.
That could mean:
- An Elseworlds-style project outside the DCU continuity
- A DCU-adjacent film that doesn’t impact Gunn’s long-term plans
- A fully integrated DCU story with a different creative voice

The first two would have minimal effect on Gunn’s roadmap. The third would represent a fundamental shift in how power is shared within DC Studios.
Either way, the story points toward a future where Gunn and Safran maintain important leadership roles — but not unchecked authority.
Final Thoughts
If Paramount Skydance wins the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition, the DCU will absolutely undergo structural changes. James Gunn may retain his position, but with less independence and more studio oversight. That’s a significant evolution — but it is not a confirmation of the dramatic online rumor that Gunn will be fired and replaced by Zack Snyder.

In reality, the Snyder-era DCEU ended because it was failing. Rumors of a grand return persist mostly through fan speculation, not industry reporting. The real story is not about a resurrection of the past — it’s about how the dynamic between Paramount and James Gunn may reshape the next era of DC storytelling.

I think James Gunn has been killing it. I enjoyed the Superman movie so much—which wasn’t woke, by the way (thank God)—that I actually went back and watched The Suicide Squad (I had skipped it) and then purchased an HBO Max subscription to watch Peacemaker season 1 due to my enjoyment of TSS.
That has led me to watch Creature Commandos and Peacemaker S2, and I’ve enjoyed both. I’ve been surprised at the criticism coming from certain corridors online (looking at you, CosmicBook).
My observation about Gunn is that he puts certain elements in his show to shut up certain loud minority critic groups or to challenge thinking on a subject, which then allows him to tell the actual story he wants to tell.
It’s not unlike Spielberg with Amblin. Per Spielberg, what the man is carrying in the suitcase in the Amblin logo is actually a suit that reflects the man (an avatar for Spielberg) was not a hippie and had more traditional values.
I assume you’re a big fan of the new wizard of oz reimagining as well. Perhaps have separate posters of each of the…… stars on your bedroom walls?
That assumption would be wrong. Gunn made a Superman Part 1 movie that was fresh when we’ve seen the Superman story told and retold over and over again (Superman, Man of Steel, Lois and Clark, Smallville, Superman Returns).
He also made it clear Superman—a white heterosexual male—was unequivocally good, led by small town American values.
What effing movie did you watch?
Snyders Justice league was weak, bloodless, girl-boss lifeless slop. (I watched the Snyder cut only last week).
He’s just as pisspoor as Gunn.
Lol. Cool. DCEU was uneven, but there were some great entries including Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, and Shazam. None of those were “weak,” “girlboss,” or “lifeless.”
Why can’t there be a third door? Dump these two and truly retool. Then, maybe a large group of people would be galvanized in their interest. Much like the original Star Wars and Iron Man unified general audiences. Anyone that prefers gunn’s vision, with his treatment of Clark’s Kansas parents is a child and not worth a squirt of piss.
