A recently discovered feature in Pokémon GO suggests the game may introduce an in-game item capable of automatically catching Pokémon. The information comes from datamining efforts and has not been officially confirmed by Niantic or Scopely at this time.

A group known as PokeMiners identified references in the game’s code to a potential item described as an “Explorer Gadget.” Early text strings suggest the item could automatically throw Poké Balls and spin PokéStops while a player explores.

How the Feature Could Work

If implemented, the feature would change how players interact with the game. At present, catching Pokémon requires players to tap a creature and throw a Poké Ball using the touchscreen.

The reported item may automate that process. Some code references suggest it could function once per day and might operate even when the app is closed.

These details remain unconfirmed. Developers often test features in code before deciding whether to release them.

Existing Auto-Catch Device

A similar feature already exists through external hardware. The Pokémon GO Plus + is an official device that allows limited automated gameplay.

The device connects to Pokémon GO using Bluetooth. Once paired, it can spin PokéStops and attempt to catch nearby Pokémon without constant screen interaction. It uses simple alerts and button input, though some functions can run automatically depending on settings.

The accessory typically retails for around $50 to $60 in many markets. However, bundled versions or resale listings have reached higher prices, sometimes near $100.

This device requires a separate purchase and regular charging. It also needs to remain connected to a smartphone during use.

An in-game item, if released, could offer similar functionality without requiring extra hardware. That difference may affect how players choose to engage with automated features.

Questions Around Availability and Design

It remains unclear how the reported item would be distributed. The feature could appear as a limited-use item, a premium purchase, or part of a broader system.

Observers have noted that similar features often include restrictions, such as perhaps a once-per-day usage limit. These may help maintain gameplay balance and prevent rapid progression.

No official announcement has clarified pricing, limits, or release timing.

Potential Impact on Gameplay

An automated catching system could affect how players engage with the game. Faster collection of Pokémon and items may change progression speed.

The game has emphasized movement and exploration since its release in 2016. Many features reward players for visiting real-world locations and interacting with the app.

Reducing direct interaction may shift that balance. However, some players may view automation as a convenience feature.

Unconfirmed Status

All current information comes from datamining. This means the feature remains a rumor until confirmed by the developers.

Not all datamined content reaches release. Some features change during development, while others are removed entirely.

As of now, neither Niantic nor Scopely has commented on the reported item.
