The Project Hail Mary box office numbers are in—and they’re far bigger than anyone expected.
Amazon MGM’s ambitious sci-fi film, starring Ryan Gosling, launched to a staggering $140.9 million worldwide, instantly making it the biggest debut of the year and signaling a major win for a studio that desperately needed one.
The global haul includes $80.5 million domestically and $60.4 million from international markets, putting it well ahead of early projections and firmly establishing the film as a legitimate theatrical event.
For comparison, Scream 7 opened to just $97.2 million worldwide, making Project Hail Mary the clear front-runner in 2026’s early box office race.
Amazon MGM Finally Lands a Theatrical Hit
This breakout performance isn’t just a win—it’s a lifeline.
Amazon MGM has spent years trying to position itself as a serious theatrical player following its $8 billion acquisition of MGM, but results have been mixed at best.

That makes the Project Hail Mary box office performance all the more significant. This is the first clear sign that Amazon MGM can actually deliver a theatrical success at scale.
And they didn’t do it with a sequel or franchise entry—they did it with an original story.
A Rare Win for Original Sci-Fi
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, Project Hail Mary follows a science teacher sent on a desperate mission to save Earth.
It’s not built on an existing cinematic universe. There’s no superhero tie-in. No legacy sequel angle.
And yet—it worked.

According to early data, the film now ranks among the top-performing non-franchise global debuts in the post-pandemic era, joining titles like Oppenheimer.
That alone should raise eyebrows in Hollywood.
Audiences showed up, not because they were told to, but because the concept—and star power—clicked.
International Markets and Premium Screens Drive the Surge
The international numbers also tell an important story.
Top markets included:
- United Kingdom: $10.2 million
- China: $7.1 million
- Australia: $5 million
- South Korea: $4.3 million
Meanwhile, premium formats played a massive role.
IMAX alone contributed $27.6 million globally, reinforcing that spectacle-driven films still benefit heavily from the theatrical experience—something studios have been trying (and often failing) to capitalize on in recent years.
Can It Hold?
The big question now: was this a front-loaded surge, or does Project Hail Mary have legs?
Early signs are encouraging.

Strong audience reactions and positive word-of-mouth could help the film maintain momentum over the coming weeks. Analysts are already suggesting it may continue drawing crowds as viewers look for something outside the usual franchise-heavy lineup.
If that happens, this could turn from a strong opening into a full-blown box office run.
A Turning Point for Amazon MGM?
For Amazon MGM, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
The studio is preparing to roll out a full theatrical slate in 2026, including major tentpoles like Masters of the Universe. But until now, there hasn’t been a clear indication that audiences were buying what they were selling.
Now, with this Project Hail Mary box office debut smashing expectations, there’s finally evidence that the strategy might actually work.
One hit doesn’t fix everything—but it changes the conversation. And for a studio trying to prove it belongs in the theatrical space, that’s a very big deal.

White actor: a hit. So much for DEI (though no doubt the movie is filled with DEI pervs.
Hollywood will learn nothing from this.
I thought the movie followed the source material really well, which definitely contributed to its success. Unlike some, Lord and Miller didn’t try to “modernize” it or make it their own. They just took the AAA caliber source material and put it on the screen.
I also like that they didn’t pull the punch at the end (if you know, you know).
