In a revealing interview, actress Rebecca Romijn has disclosed that the script for Marvel Studios’ big budget team up movie Avengers: Doomsday remains unfinished, even as production has been underway for three months. This admission appears to contradict statements from Marvel chief Kevin Feige, who recently asserted that the studio never begins filming without a complete script.

Romijn, known for her role as Mystique in the original X-Men trilogy is now joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for Doomsday. She shared her uncertainty about her filming schedule during a conversation at San Diego Comic Con with The Hollywood Reporter.

When asked if she had wrapped her scenes, Romijn responded, “I’m not quite sure. The script hasn’t—they haven’t finished writing it. It’s been delayed.” She further declined to confirm whether she had read the entire script, stating, “I cannot confirm nor deny that I have read the entire script.”
The revelation comes amid reports that Avengers: Doomsday has been in production since April 2025, with principal photography ongoing despite script revisions.

The film, directed by the Russo brothers and set for release in December 2026, marks a pivotal entry in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. It features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, alongside a sprawling ensemble cast including returning Avengers like Anthony Mackie and Chris Hemsworth, along with newer additions like The Fantastic Four.
Romijn’s involvement was announced earlier this year, alongside other stars from the Fox X-Men films like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

This news has fueled discussions about Marvel’s production practices, particularly in light of Feige’s recent defense of the studio’s approach.
In an interview with Variety published last week, Feige pushed back against criticisms from DC Studios co-head James Gunn, who implied that some competitors greenlight films without finalized scripts.

Feige stated, “We’ve never started a movie without a full script and I have never been satisfied with a script that we’ve had.” He emphasized Marvel’s habit of “plussing” projects—continuously improving them during production—while crediting the process for incorporating actor input.
“Actors… know these characters so well. If they have an idea, you want to listen to it and you want to adjust to it and you want to improve it,” Feige added.

However, Romijn’s comments suggest a more fluid reality for Doomsday. Sources indicate that the film has faced delays, pushing its release from an initial target of Spring 2026 and necessitating ongoing script work. This aligns with broader reports of creative shifts in the MCU following the pivot from Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to Doomsday after actor Jonathan Majors’ legal issues and the decision to refocus on Doctor Doom as the central antagonist.
Compounding the script concerns is the recent involvement of writer Michael Waldron, best known for creating Loki Season 1 and penning Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Feige confirmed that Waldron is assisting Avengers: Endgame co-writer Stephen McFeely on the Doomsday screenplay, a move described as bolstering the team months into filming.

Waldron, who was originally attached to the now-scrapped Kang Dynasty, has expressed enthusiasm for the project, noting in interviews that adapting to the MCU’s evolving narrative is part of the challenge.
Industry insiders have mixed reactions to the news. Some view the ongoing revisions as a strength of Marvel’s collaborative model, allowing for real-time enhancements based on cast feedback and test screenings. Others worry it could lead to rushed character arcs in a film already burdened with a massive ensemble—potentially over 60 heroes, according to rumors—risking the “useless or rushed” portrayals fans have criticized in recent MCU entries like Eternals or Quantumania.

The disclosure has sparked lively debate on social media, with fans expressing concern over production stability.
Excited or not you can’t ignore how incredibly thrown together this entire film feels, and sounds.
Unfinished scripts while filming. Bringing back actors purely because of creative bankruptcy and hype moments. I don’t sense the passion behind it whatsoever. https://t.co/qApKbrIx3x

One X user noted, “Unfinished scripts while filming. Bringing back actors purely because of creative bankruptcy and hype moments. I don’t sense the passion behind it whatsoever.”
Despite these hurdles, Marvel remains optimistic, with Feige highlighting the studio’s track record of delivering blockbusters even amid adjustments. Of course from a “what have you done for me lately” perspective, fans are understandably frustrated and nervous.

Movies like Captain America: Brave New World, and The Marvels reportedly went through quite a bit of Feige’s “plussing,” which can also be described as massive rewrites and extensive reshoots. Both movies were sequels to billion dollar hits, both were deeply unpopular with audiences, and both flopped hard at the box office.
As Avengers: Doomsday continues filming in Atlanta and London, all eyes are on whether these script tweaks will elevate the film or signal deeper challenges for the MCU.

With Secret Wars looming as the saga’s finale in 2027, Marvel’s ability to balance ambition with execution will be crucial. Romijn, for her part, remains tight-lipped on specifics but enthusiastic about her MCU debut, teasing, “It’s an honor to be part of this universe again.”
Marvel Studios has not yet responded to requests for comment on Romijn’s statements or the script’s status.
