Ridley Scott’s Gladiator remains one of his most iconic films. It won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, and star Russell Crowe also took home the award for Best Actor. While 2024’s Gladiator II performed well at the box office, the film ultimately received mixed reviews and harsh criticism from some audiences.

Russell Crowe recently addressed why he believes Gladiator II failed to live up to the legacy of the original film. The Maximus actor highlighted the differences between the two historical epics and claimed the filmmakers failed to understand what made Gladiator resonate with audiences.

The Moral Core Of Gladiator

Deadline reports that Crowe was addressing a crowd at the Taormina Film Festival.

The actor revealed that he repeatedly pushed back against pressure from studio executives and producers who wanted intimate scenes involving Maximus and Lucilla. From his perspective, Gladiator was the story of a man avenging the death of his family. He argued that those scenes would have undermined the entire purpose of the character’s journey.

“They fought me, they sent me letters about it and everything, and I just stuck to my guns,” Crowe recalled. “Luckily for me, Ridley, even though he would have loved to write a sex scene with me and Connie Nielsen, he agreed with me back then, and that that was the moral core of the film.”

The actor argued that maintaining that focus was crucial to the film’s success.

“On the surface, Gladiator is a movie for men but if it was a movie for men, it would be about revenge. But it’s not about revenge,” Crowe said. “It’s a movie for women because it’s about vengeance and this is a subtle difference, but it is a difference. I needed the character to stay on that track.”

That foundation, he claims, is exactly what the sequel lacked.

Crowe Says The Sequel Missed The Point

Rather than citing the lack of awards recognition for Gladiator II, Russell Crowe pointed to something much more concrete—the box office.

While Gladiator II earned roughly $462 million worldwide, a figure similar to the original film’s global total, Crowe noted that the two movies were released nearly a quarter-century apart. “When you apply how much of a change there’s been on the value of a dollar, they failed,” Crowe said.

In today’s dollars, Gladiator’s worldwide box office total is somewhere between $874 million and $880 million.

“They failed because they didn’t understand why it was successful,” Crowe said. “It had a moral core.”

Audience Reception Tells A Similar Story

On Criticless, Gladiator currently holds an audience score of 93% “Most Excellent” with more than 100 users. Comparatively, Gladiator II sits at a 44% “Decent” rating with nearly 80 users.

While audience scores are only one measurement of a film’s reception, they align with the broader criticism that the sequel struggled to capture the emotional weight of the original. Crowe’s comments suggest he believes the difference was not the action, spectacle, or even the performances.

Instead, he argues that Gladiator succeeded because it stayed focused on Maximus’ purpose and principles. More than two decades later, Russell Crowe appears convinced that was the ingredient Gladiator II never managed to replicate.
