Lionsgate has officially greenlit a sequel to the psychological thriller The Housemaid following the original film’s box office success. The Housemaid opened in U.S. theatres on December 19, 2025, directed by Paul Feig and starring Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway. The film earned over $133 million worldwide against a reported $35 million budget in its first few weeks of release, marking a commercial achievement for the studio.

Sequel Announcement

Lionsgate’s announcement confirmed that Sweeney is set to reprise her role as Millie and will also serve as an executive producer on the sequel. Director Paul Feig and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who worked on the first film, are expected to return as director and writer, respectively. Co‑star Michele Morrone is also reported to be returning.

Adam Fogelson of Lionsgate said in the sequel announcement, “It’s clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly — and audibly — to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next.”

Fogelson continued, “The Housemaid’s Secret is another wildly thrilling book in Freida’s series that has captivated readers worldwide, and we look forward to translating it into a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience.”

The sequel will follow the plot of McFadden’s 2023 novel The Housemaid’s Secret, which continues Millie’s story after the events of the first book and film. Specific plot details for the sequel have not yet been released by the studio, butt will again explore psychological tension and suspense as Millie enters a new situation involving another household.

Context

Amanda Seyfried, who portrayed Nina Winchester in the original film, has publicly expressed interest in returning for the sequel in some capacity, potentially as a cameo. Her character does not appear in Freida McFadden’s second novel, The Housemaid’s Secret, and Lionsgate has not officially confirmed whether she will be involved.

The decision to accelerate development of the sequel came just weeks after The Housemaid premiered in theaters, where it continues to screen in early 2026. Lionsgate cited both the film’s financial performance and audience reception as central reasons for moving forward with a follow-up project.

McFadden has continued the Housemaid series beyond the second novel, including the release of The Housemaid Is Watching, which could provide material for potential future adaptations.

As of early 2026, Lionsgate has not announced an official release date for The Housemaid’s Secret. Additional casting information and production updates are expected as the project progresses toward filming later this year.
