A revival of Darkwing Duck from producer Seth Rogen is reportedly still in the works. According to ScreenRant, the project has been in development since 2020 but has seen little visible progress. However, recent remarks from Darkwing Duck voice actor Jim Cummings suggest that the Masked Mallard could return on Disney+ under Rogen’s watch.

“If It’s Not Broke, You Don’t Fix It”

At an appearance at the Saturn Awards, Cummings spoke briefly about the long-in-development project. “I think it’s long overdue. And we’re all still alive and kicking,” he told ScreenRant. “I guess Seth Rogen, my old buddy, he’s going to be one of the prime movers, shakers. So stay tuned.”

The original Darkwing Duck debuted in 1991 as part of the popular Disney Afternoon programming block. Cummings voiced Drake Mallard, a masked crimefighter parodying pulp heroes such as The Shadow, who were experiencing a brief revival in pop culture at the time. The character had to balance crimefighting with the care of his adopted 9-year-old daughter, Gosalyn.

Darkwing Duck ran for 91 episodes and was nominated for an Annie Award for Best Animated Television Program. Cummings won an Annie Award for his vocal work. Over the years, the character continued in comic books and maintained a strong cultural footprint.

While no official details for the revival are available, Cummings gave a hint of what fans could expect. “Well, we’ve only recorded basically one offshoot so far. But the thing is, if it’s not broke, you don’t fix it,” he said. “Gosalyn’s grown up. So that’s interesting. But yeah, you stay tuned.”

Darkwing Duck revival with a traditional approach likely has many millennials saying, “Let’s get dangerous.” However, a Darkwing Duck revival executive produced by Seth Rogen may give many fans pause.

Seth Rogen’s Reputation

Until recently, Rogen’s work has largely been associated with raunchy comedies built around gross-out gags and substance-heavy humor. That background represents a notable tonal contrast with the largely family-friendly style of the original Darkwing Duck.

In 2023, Rogen served as a producer and co-writer on the animated reboot Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. While the film was commercially successful, some longtime fans criticized elements such as the redesign of April O’Neil and the film’s sometimes edgy language.

Rogen also served as an executive producer on a new version of The Muppet Show for Disney+ in early 2026. The project further highlights the comedian’s recent shift toward producing revivals of long-running entertainment franchises. Though the backdoor pilot was largely inoffensive, some Muppet fans expressed hesitation over Rogen’s involvement.

What’s Next for Darkwing Duck?

Despite Cummings’ assurances, many fans remain cautious about what a Darkwing Duck revival led by Seth Rogen might look like. The original series thrived on clever satire, family-friendly adventure, and tightly crafted storytelling—qualities that may not naturally align with Rogen’s comedic sensibilities. For viewers hoping for a faithful continuation of the Masked Mallard’s world, the production team faces the challenge of balancing nostalgia with modern reinterpretation.

For now, the revival remains in an uncertain stage: early recordings have been made, but no release date or full cast has been confirmed. The bigger question for many millennials may not be “Is Darkwing Duck coming back?” but “Which childhood classic will Seth Rogen take over next?”
