Paramount Pictures has set its sights on expanding the adventures of everyone’s favorite supersonic hero. The studio has confirmed ahead of this weekend’s release of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is on track to debut in spring 2027.
This decision arrives at a pivotal moment: Sonic 3 is gearing up for its theatrical launch, with projections indicating a robust domestic opening weekend of approximately $55 million to $60 million from a widespread North American rollout.

As the holiday season approaches, industry insiders anticipate that this newest chapter in Sonic’s cinematic journey will dominate the domestic box office. Paramount will then introduce the movie in 52 international territories on Christmas Day.
Early reactions from critics suggest the film’s popularity will soar, as it has secured a commendable 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The franchise’s track record more than justifies Paramount’s confidence.
Collectively, the first two installments of Sonic the Hedgehog grossed a noteworthy $725.2 million worldwide. Beyond ticket sales, the brand’s influence has spilled over into digital markets, with home entertainment transactions topping $180 million globally.

Adding to the series’ cultural footprint, the character’s universe expanded earlier this year with the Knuckles spinoff series on Paramount Plus.
Sonic 3 faces stiff competition this weekend from Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King. However, industry experts expect Sonic to rocket past Simba’s dad domestically, in what would be a huge box office upset. The big budget Lion King prequel is expected to draw $50 million at the domestic box office while holding the lion’s share of Dolby and IMAX theaters and their far higher ticket prices.

That means, if Sonic 3 does pull out a slim win over Mufasa, it will actually be a far greater victory, considering the uphill battle the blur blur has to fight in order to claim North American box office supremacy.
While Sonic 4 is on its way, fans will have to wait patiently for any glimpse of its storyline. For now, Paramount is remaining tight lipped on what it has planned for the future of this franchise. However, we will see Sonic and friends again in 2027.
