It is one of the strangest stories we’ve covered, perhaps ever, on That Park Place. Billy Dee Williams, known for his role in the original Star Wars trilogy as Lando, came out with amazing responses to the Charlie Kirk tragedy via his Facebook page. They were pro-human, pro-living, and fully empathetic. Yet days later, Williams has released a statement claiming his page was “hacked” and none of those views are his own.

One might wonder if Billy Dee Williams is fully in charge of his accounts at this point. After all, it’s one thing to be “hacked” by a user that posts empathetic responses to a national tragedy and then clarify… it’s another to vow those views don’t belong to the account whatsoever. Talk about a PR blunder of seismic levels!

Here’s one of the original posts from Billy Dee Williams:

And here’s the supposed “clean up”:

At 88 years of age, one might wonder if any of this is actually even Billy Dee Williams at all.

Often, older celebrities are managed online via publicists and PR teams. So did the account get “hacked” and then a publicist respond in one of the worst ways possible as a result? It’s hard to say.

What’s not difficult to say is that some of us here at That Park Place have met Billy Dee Williams before. He’s a kind person and really invests in individuals. It is hard to imagine that Billy Dee Williams would handle the situation the way we’re witnessing.

A better response might’ve been to clarify that the account had been hacked and then say that while Billy Dee Williams did not write those posts (older celebrities rarely write any of their social media stuff anyway), that he extends his heartfelt sympathies and prayers to those impacted by the national tragedy and to all violence. That would have likely calmed everything down. Instead, it seems likely that a PR team threw Mr. Williams, at 88 years old, under the social media bus.

Shame to hackers, shame to incompetent PR teams, shame to those who use the elderly for their gain. And just to clarify, every sign is that Mr. Williams is a fully cognizant and intellectually-enabled person at his age… but I would still contend that most 88 year olds aren’t using social media to weigh in on daily events.

So whomever might be running it should maybe run for another career. It’s a gross way to handle the communications for a celebrity known for his kindness the world over.
