After three years of waiting, fans of Stranger Things returned to Hawkins in record numbers. Season five debuted on November 26th, and in its first five days accumulated 59.6 million views worldwide. That’s not just impressive — it’s record-breaking.

Stranger Things season 5 now holds the title of the highest opening week total views to date for any English-language series on Netflix by a wide margin. The first season of Wednesday previously held the crown with 50.1 million views in 2022. Overall, Stranger Things season 5 is the third-best opening week for any Netflix series after seasons 2 and 3 of Squid Game.
And this is only first the chapter of Stranger Things’ final season. Fans will likely push the show to the top of the streaming charts two more times before the end of the year, meaning more records are probably about to be broken.
A Decade in the Making
In addition to the impressive number of views, What’s On Netflix notes that Stranger Things debuted as the week’s number one show and was watched 284.2 million hours globally. After years of anticipation, months of promotion, and an abundance of brand deals (you can get a Stranger Things frozen pizza at Walmart), the fandom was at fever pitch.

A press release from Netflix celebrating the first week’s record-shattering numbers included a note from the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer.
“The show is now a decade old, and seeing the fanbase not only endure but continue to grow has been incredibly rewarding for us, the actors, and the thousands of artists who helped bring this story to life,” they wrote. “We truly cannot thank everyone enough, and we are beyond excited to share Volume 2 — there’s so much more to come!”

The success must come as relief to Netflix, as the series’ ultimate season was major investment and nearly derailed by bad press.
Investments and Damage Control
Netflix reportedly spent between $50 million and $60 million on each of the eight episodes — in total, nearly half a billion dollars. Not only does that place it among one of the most expensive TV seasons of all time, it’s a level of investment generally reserved for major-event feature films.
A theatrical release was something the Duffer Brothers had been championing, and when it looked unlikely they signed a deal with Paramount.

Losing two of its biggest creators to a rival may have felt like something of a black eye. Netflix shocked everyone when it announced that the two-hour final chapter, officially titled The Rightside Up, would show in in more than 350 U.S. movie theaters. Regardless of whether it was attempt to part ways on good terms, or a reaction to the theatrical success of KPop Demon Hunters, tickets for the Stranger Things finale on New Year’s Eve sold out in some locations.

Another threat to the show’s success arose when the Daily Mail published a report that Millie Bobby Brown had filed harassment accusations against co-star David Harbour. Disaster seemed to have been avoided when the two appeared on the red carpet together looking natural and happy.

But what happens on red carpets, or may happen at movie theaters at the end of the year, might not have mattered if Stranger Things’ fifth season didn’t have a strong debut in homes around the world.
Conclusion
Stranger Things season five’s record-shattering debut suggests that there’s still a desire for shared experiences. In a time when the market is fragmented from an abundance of options, a huge audience showing up to avoid spoilers and be able to engage with other fans is increasingly rare. It may not just be the end of Stranger Things, but the end of an era.
