The Hollywood Reporter has retracted a claim that the United States is “occupied land” in an article promoting Lily Gladstone’s Oscar nomination for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon film.

Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter’s Rebecca Sun published an article titled 2024 “Oscars: Lily Gladstone Is First Native American Acting Nominee.”
The subheading asserted, “Other Indigenous actors have been nominated in the past, but the ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ star is the first to come from the land now occupied by the United States.”

The subheadline was subsequently called out by Breitbart’s David Ng, who noted the subheading appeared to be part of the “left’s ‘decolonization’ movement that is attempting to rid the world of western influences and ideology.”
Ng further noted that Gladstone herself appears to be a member of this movement as she told The Hollywood Reproter in an interview that she falsely describes herself using “they” pronouns is “partly a way of decolonizing gender for myself.”

Following Breitbart calling out The Hollywood Reporter as well as contacting Sun, who is the outlet’s senior editor of diversity and inclusion, The Hollywood Reporter completely changed the subheading.
As of writing, the subheading currently states, “The nomination for the ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ star represents another indigenous milestone.”

David Ng shows that calling out these publications can create significant blowback for them and force them to change. It’s a tactic we must deploy more often and ensure the lies, even if they might seem insignificant, are called out and refuted.
