Filming for The Last of Us Season 3 is being paused from June 1 to June 28, according to new reports.
Production began in Vancouver on March 2 under the codename Calm Current and is expected to wrap on November 27. While HBO Max has yet to announce an official release date, The Last of Us Season 3 is expected to arrive sometime in 2027.

No official reason has been given for the pause. However, the development comes amid ongoing discussion about the future of the series following Season 2’s divisive reception and several behind-the-scenes changes.
Production Paused Until Late June
ScreenRant reports that the production pause on The Last of Us Season 3 was confirmed through listings from the British Columbia Director’s Guide of Canada. The document includes a listing for Calm Current Season 3, with The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin attached as director. The production dates align with those previously reported for The Last of Us and include the June hiatus.
No one connected to the show has publicly addressed the break. However, there is no indication that the controversial series is being canceled. ScreenRant suggests the pause could be related to the World Cup, which will take place in the area during that period.
The timing is particularly notable because Season 3 was already facing questions about its creative direction and development.
Questions Surround Season 3’s Future
Development of the third season has already faced challenges. After Season 2, which adapted part of the video game’s storyline, proved deeply divisive, viewership declined sharply. Many viewers objected to the deaths of major characters and the way they were portrayed. Additionally, some critics argued that the show pushed a socially progressive agenda.

Neil Druckmann, the creator of the video game series, also served as an executive producer, writer, and showrunner on the HBO adaptation. He departed the series in July 2025. At the time, Druckmann said he wanted to focus on developing new video game projects. Nevertheless, the timing of his exit attracted significant attention.
Druckmann’s co-showrunner, Craig Mazin, ultimately assumed full creative control. In August, Mazin confirmed that production would begin before all the scripts were completed. Season 3 is expected to adapt the second half of The Last of Us Part II, focusing on the controversial character Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. Some observers have suggested this could be a gamble for a series that has already lost momentum.
The Last of Us Season 3 pause may give the writing team additional time to get ahead of production.
A Pause at a Critical Moment
For now, there is little evidence that the hiatus signals a major problem behind the scenes. Production pauses are not unheard of on large television projects, and HBO has given no indication that its plans for the series have changed. Even so, the timing has attracted attention.

Coming after Druckmann’s departure, declining viewership, and reports that scripts were still being completed, the break is likely to fuel further speculation among fans. Whether the pause proves insignificant or reflects broader challenges will become clearer once filming resumes later this month. Until then, viewers will be watching closely for signs that Season 3 remains on track.
