If you’re stepping off a Disney Cruise Line ship in The Bahamas today expecting to grab a frozen cocktail on the beach at Castaway Cay or Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, you’re going to run into an unusual surprise.

Alcohol sales have been temporarily halted across the islands as part of a nationwide restriction tied to the Bahamian general election. The move impacts Disney’s private island destinations because, despite the branding and Disney-operated experiences, the locations still fall under Bahamian law and governance.

The temporary restriction applies from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time on May 12 while polling stations remain open throughout the country.

According to notices sent to guests aboard affected sailings, alcoholic beverages are not available for purchase on the islands during the restriction window. Bars and beverage stations remain operational for non-alcoholic drinks.

Disney Cruise Guests Receive Notice Ahead of Island Stops

Disney Cruise Line reportedly informed guests ahead of time about the temporary alcohol policy change.

One guest notice sent to passengers aboard the Disney Fantasy stated: “Due to the Bahamian General Election on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, The Bahamas has issued a public notice prohibiting the sale of alcohol on that day.”

The notice continued: “To accommodate and respect this public notice, alcoholic beverages will not be available for purchase on May 12 at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.”

Disney also clarified that onboard operations would continue normally during the sailing: “For this sailing, you may purchase alcoholic beverages at our shipboard bar locations.”

The company added that island bars would remain open for soft drinks and other non-alcoholic offerings.

Disney’s Private Islands Are Still Subject to Bahamian Law

The situation serves as a reminder that Disney’s highly themed private destinations are not independent Disney-controlled territories. Both Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay operate within The Bahamas and must follow local regulations.

That includes election-related restrictions like the temporary alcohol sales ban now in effect.

The policy is not directed specifically at Disney Cruise Line. Other cruise operators with Bahamian private destinations are also affected by the nationwide restriction.

Cruise passengers visiting other private islands throughout the region today may encounter similar limitations depending on the port and local enforcement.

Which Disney Cruise Ships Are Impacted?

Based on publicly available port schedules, two Disney Cruise Line ships appear to be docked at Disney’s private destinations during the restriction period.

Those ships include:

  • Disney Wish at Castaway Cay
  • Disney Fantasy at Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

Guests aboard those sailings can still purchase alcoholic beverages onboard the ships themselves, but not while visiting the islands during the restricted hours.

A Strange Day for Disney Cruise Vacationers

For many Disney Cruise passengers, beach bars and island drink packages are a normal part of the vacation experience, especially at destinations specifically designed around resort-style relaxation.

That’s part of why the restriction has generated attention online. For one day only, Disney Cruise guests visiting the company’s private island locations are effectively experiencing a “dry dock” scenario ashore.

The restriction is expected to end once polling closes later this evening.

Still, it creates one of the more unusual operational disruptions Disney Cruise Line guests have seen at Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay since the islands became major selling points for Caribbean itineraries.

For travelers already onboard, the change is temporary. But for guests who planned a beach day centered around tropical drinks and island bars, today’s stop likely looks a little different than expected.
