Scott Anderson, a Senior Graphics Engineer at Unity Technologies, defended Marvel’s Black Panther developer Dani Lalonders and her race-based hiring discrimination while she developed her game ValiDate.

Lalonders admitted to race-based hiring discrimination during a presentation for the Game Devs of Color Expo 2021 that was recently brought to the public’s attention after Lalonders defended Sweet Baby Inc. and admitted she was a racist.

During the presentation Lalonders stated, “ValiDate has a team of all people of color. We have no white people on our team. I did that because I wanted to create a safe environment. And I know the best way for the environment to be safe is to be around people who are just like me.”

“And I’m not saying that white people in the industry are creating unsafe environments. I’m not saying that. That is not what I’m saying,” she said. “I’m saying sometimes it is hard to work with white people because they think that something may be okay, but it was really a microaggression, and no one wants to deal with that while you’re trying to make a game that they love.”

As noted above Lalonders’ comments were brought to attention when she accused gamers of racism, but then admitted she was a racist while attempting to defend Sweet Baby Inc. Lalonders also worked for Sweet Baby Inc. between October 2022 and May 2023.

She posted on X, “gamers have been really racist lately and im trying to ignore it buts its hard not to :^( when i see it sometimes.”

“just creating problems in your head. i don’t understand the outrage over video games. especially games they have no interest to play.” Lalonders concluded.

In another series of posts on March 7th, Lalonders wrote, “i just stopped taking yall seriously when yall start running around saying white people can experience racism because i did not suffer through 2020 for yall to act like you werent an ally to blm 4 years later.”

“posting that tired a** screenshot of the google definition of racism. i just dont care anymore,” Lalonders concluded.

She would later admit to being a racist in a response to Rileyman1080, who wrote, “Hahaha so being appropriately called racist is tiresome, huh? You could try not being racist.”

Lalonders responded, “Yeah im racist so what now?

Lalonders later stated that if you believe you can be racist towards white people that makes you racist.

She wrote, “if you think you can be racist to white people, you literally are.”

“Racism and prejudice are not the same thing. racism is systematic,” Lalonders explained. “white people are not systematically affected negatively by racism. certain groups of white people throughout history have been affected by prejudice based on where theyre from.”

Anderson defended Lalonders posting on X, “People calling a Black woman building a studio with all POC a racist and equating it to a white man starting an all white studio is wild. If the power imbalances that actually exist in reality were different, sure, but there is no way these things are equivalent.”

He added, “This is, of course ignoring that white men start studios that are all or mostly white men all of the time and no one cares.”

Anderson then justified the race-based discrimination writing, “Worst case scenario this is a result of trauma, not a desire for exclusion and definitely not supremacy. Context is completely ignored in all of these discussions. This is a valid self preservation tactic for Black people, not a way to gain power over others.”
