Paramount+ has officially greenlit Dutton Ranch Season 2 after the series delivered a record-breaking debut for the streaming platform.

The renewal announcement comes before the first season has even concluded, underscoring the continued popularity of the Yellowstone spinoff. According to Paramount, Dutton Ranch attracted 12.9 million viewers globally during its first week, making it the biggest original series premiere in Paramount+ history. It also performed well in the key 18-49 demographic and reached number one on the the Nielsen streaming charts for the week of May 11.

A Record-Breaking Start for the Yellowstone Spinoff

Dutton Ranch follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they attempt to rebuild their lives after the events of Yellowstone.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the logline for the first season reads: “As Beth and Rip fight to build a future together — far from the ghosts of Montana — they collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire. In South Texas, blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting, and the cost of survival might just be your soul.”

In a press release, Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+, said, “Beth and Rip are among the most iconic duos in television history and we are thrilled to bring a whole new world to life with Dutton Ranch for our subscribers around the world.”

She went on to praise the production partners “for bringing this new series to life with such grit, heart and authenticity.”

A New Showrunner Will Take the Reins

Despite the strong ratings, Dutton Ranch has not been entirely free of behind-the-scenes drama. Chad Feehan, who created the series and served as showrunner during its first season, departed the production before the show’s premiere. The exact circumstances surrounding his exit remain unclear.

Dutton Ranch Season 2 was announced before a new showrunner was confirmed. However, The Hollywood Reporter revealed on June 30 that Benjamin Cavell, whose previous credits include Justified, will take over as showrunner and executive producer for the second season. Meanwhile, Reilly and Hauser will continue to serve as executive producers alongside their starring roles.

Matt Thunell, President of Paramount Television Studios, said in the press release, “Dutton Ranch has resonated with audiences in a powerful way, building on the legacy of beloved characters, while establishing its own identity.”

Paramount Continues to Bet on Yellowstone

For now, that distinct identity appears to be serving the series well. As Taylor Sheridan’s television universe continues to expand on Paramount+, some critics and viewers have expressed concern that an ever-growing slate of spinoffs could eventually dilute the Yellowstone brand.

Paramount’s decision to move forward with Dutton Ranch Season 2 suggests the company sees little evidence of franchise fatigue—and the viewership numbers appear to support that assessment. In addition to Dutton Ranch, the studio continues to expand the Yellowstone universe through projects such as Marshals and other planned spinoffs.

Whether that expansion can continue indefinitely remains an open question. For now, however, the success of Dutton Ranch suggests that audiences remain eager to follow familiar characters into new corners of the Yellowstone universe—and Paramount appears more than willing to keep creating them.
