The Critics Consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads, “Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire proves Zack Snyder hasn’t lost his visual flair, but eye candy isn’t enough to offset a storyline made up of various sci-fi/fantasy tropes.”
The Audience Says section reads, “Even if Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire borrows heavily from other sci-fi stories, it’s still entertaining — and often visually dazzling.”
The film wasn’t just panned on Rotten Tomatoes. It received poor scores on Metacritic as well. The film currently has a Metascore of 31 from critics. There is only 1 positive score, 21 mixed scores, and 18 negative scores.
The user score on Metacritic is similar to the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It currently sits at 5.6 with 267 positive reviews, 100 mixed reviews, and 224 negative reviews.
On IMDb, the film has a score of 5.6 from over 102,000 reviews.
Snyder reacted to these negative reviews while speaking with Empire to promote the second film in the series, Rebel Moon: Part Two – Scargiver.
He told the outlet, “I don’t really have a rebuttal to the reviews. For whatever reason, the reaction to my movies is very polarising, and it always has been. The movie, it doesn’t seem like there’s that much in it that would warrant such visceral responses.”
As noted above, the movie does not seem to be polarizing at all as nearly all the critics panned it and viewers seemed quite aligned with their view that the movie was simply middling.
Not only was the film not polarizing, but it quickly faded from memory after it was released on Netflix. The film arrived on Netflix on December 22, 2023. According to Netflix it was the most watched film in the week of its release with 54.1 million hours viewed and 23.9 million views.
It remained atop the charts in its second week and brought in 77 million hours viewed and 34 million views. However, by its third week, its hours viewed fell to 25.1 million and its views dropped to 11.1 million. It also lost the top spot for English films to Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer 3, which had a lengthy run at the box office earlier in 2023.
Finally, in its fourth week the film dropped to 8th spot only bringing in 8.9 million hours viewed and 3.9 million views. The movie failed to chart in its fifth week in the middle of January falling below 10th place Leo, which raked in 5.8 million hours viewed and 3.3 million views.
