Vince Zampella, the video game developer behind many popular series like Call of Duty, died in a single-car crash Sunday afternoon. He was 55. According to the California Highway Patrol, Zampella and another individual were traveling on Southern California’s Angeles Crest Highway when their Ferrari went off the road and struck a concrete barrier.
An Impressive Career
During his tenure as CEO of Infinity Ward, Zampella was credited with creating Call of Duty, which has gone on to become one of the best-selling video game franchises in history. In 2010, he co-founded and served as the head of Respawn Entertainment. Four years later Respawn released Titanfall, kicking off a series of popular titles including Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Electronic Arts acquired the studio in 2017.

The news sent shockwaves through the gaming industry. Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards and author of the book, Vince was an extraordinary person — a gamer at heart, but also a visionary executive with a rare ability to recognize talent and give people the freedom and confidence to create something truly great,” he wrote.

Many fans echoed the sentiment, calling Zampella a legend and expressing their grief. Streamer Xfactor Gaming shared a memory from a pre-release event for Titanfall. “[Zampella] said something to the effect of ‘I wanted to do it my way, and it looks like I made the right call. Looks like everyone is having fun, which is the point of all of this.'”
I had the pleasure of hanging out with Vince Zampella on multiple trips through the years.
Had some lovely conversations and experiences as well.

Sad news. By all accounts he was a gamer making fun games. Unfortunately, the EA influence tainted most of the games coming out of Respawn, but the ones I played were pretty dang fun.
His turn around of Battlefield was no small feat. The Titanfall games are recognized for their exceptional storytelling. The Star Wars title are both *chef’s kiss*. Can’t say much about Apex or CoD because I never played them, but people seem to like ’em.
It sounds like he went off the road and maybe hit a barricade. He was driving a brand new Ferrari (2026), was probably driving too fast for conditions; weather, road, and inexperience with a new exotic masterpiece.
