Nexus is set to return in Nexus: Scourge, where he will battle “an ancient evil” to determine the fate of the universe. And if the just-launched crowdfunding campaign is anything to go by, fans are as excited as ever to see this forthcoming graphic novel written by the classic comic book hero’s co-creator Mike Baron.

“In Nexus: Scourge, readers are thrust into an enthralling narrative as Nexus investigates the mystery of vanishing planets, and complete star systems,” Baron Comics and BIG Studios announced. “With the universe on the brink of destruction, Nexus must unravel the truth against seemingly insurmountable odds. Scourge offers a vibrant expansion of the Nexus universe, filled with villainy, danger, and deceit.”

Artist Kelsey Shannon and letterer Warren Montgomery join Baron in bringing this newest standalone story to life. Shannon’s past work includes artistic duties for Batman Adventures, Dark Fang, and Norah’s Saga, while Montgomery has contributed his talents to titles such as Florida Man and Fun Adventure Comics.

Dark Horse Comics was originally set to publish the tale. However, “unforeseen challenges during the pandemic pushed dozens of projects back, prompting Baron to take matters into his own hands and publish it himself, with Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson’s blessing.”

Baron is no stranger to self-publishing. He’s done it quite successfully with graphic novels Bronze Star, Thin Blue Line, and Florida Man vs. Hogzilla. And it looks as if he and his team are in the midst of having yet another win with Nexus: Scourge.

Baron Comics and BIG Studios opened the crowdfunding campaign for the book on April 8 and they reported they hit their initial goal “within the first hour on Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Fund My Comic.” They added they raised over $25,000 “in less than 24 hours.”

As it stands as of the time of this writing, the campaign is now over $32,000 and has unlocked three of its seven stretch goals. The team indicated it has something particularly interesting or unique in mind for its sixth stretch goal, which is currently quite a ways off at $75,000. They haven’t provided a clue for what it is but have teased they “can’t wait to announce this one!”

Readers who are interested in backing the project still have plenty of time to head over to Baron Comics and select which platform to use to support it. And for those who want something to read right now? Baron Comics has choices for that as well, including the aforementioned Bronze Star, Thin Blue Line, and Florida Man vs. Hogzilla.

While the Nexus: Scourge team is no doubt focused on promoting the book, finishing strong on the crowdfunding campaign, and delivering the title into the hands of readers, it’s also indicated there are more Nexus titles planned. In fact, if the team hits its $40,000 stretch goal, backers will “receive an early preview of Nexus: Triplets.”

Mike Baron and artist Steve Rude created Nexus in 1981. The character has appeared in over 100 comic book issues and both creators have recently told new Nexus stories on their own.
