In an interview with The Gamer, Yoshi-P first discussed how the Final Fantasy XVI team was inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII, “We have a lot of our staff who worked on previous games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 12, so you’re going to have a lot of that [Tactics] feel because a lot of the same people are on the team.”

Next, he hinted that a Final Fantasy Tactics game might be on the horizon, “We love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one.”

It does not appear that the game will be based in the setting of Final Fantasy XVI, Valisthea.

Final Fantasy XVI Localization lead Michael-Christopher Koji Fox questioned, “What would we even call it? Final Fantasy 16 Tactics? That’s a lot.”

The original Final Fantasy Tactics was set in Ivalice, the same setting as Final Fantasy XII albeit set before the events of the main title. The game followed two friends Ramza and Delita as they are caught in the middle of the Lion War.

A follow-up, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, was created following the release of Final Fantasy XII that was also set in Ivalice. However, it was during the time period of Final Fantasy XII rather than the original Final Fantasy Tactics.

That game was an isekai and followed the story of a young boy named Marche as he attempted to return to his town of St. Ivalice after he was transported to Ivalice.

A direct sequel in Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift was released in Japan in 2007 and then to the West in 2008.

It too was an isekai. It followed Luso Clemens who obtains the Grimoire of the Rift and is transported to Ivalice where he joins Clan Gully led by Cid. After Cid is injured he takes command and faces off against the criminal syndicate known as the Khamja and one of its members Illua. Not only did the Grimoire allow Luso to travel to Ivalice, but it has the power to create portals to other worlds and Illua wants to use it harness its powers.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift was the last Final Fantasy Tactics game created albeit a PSP version of Final Fantasy Tactics titled Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions was also released in 2007.
