The DCU’s long-gestating Batman: The Brave and The Bold project is once again mired in uncertainty. Rumors are swirling that Andy Muschietti, director of the disastrous The Flash, may no longer be steering the first Batman outing in James Gunn’s rebooted universe. Yet Gunn himself has insisted Muschietti is still attached.

This latest confusion only adds to the perception that DC Studios is struggling to find steady footing as it rebuilds from the wreckage of the old DCEU.
A Project Caught in Delay
The Brave and The Bold is slated to introduce the DCU’s Batman and Damian Wayne as Robin, drawing inspiration from Grant Morrison’s acclaimed comic run. Muschietti was tapped to direct the new Batman back in 2023, alongside producer Barbara Muschietti, but progress has been anything but clear.

Recently, Muschietti admitted in interviews that he hasn’t spoken with James Gunn in over a year and that the project has been “postponed a bit” to make room for other films. Gunn, however, quickly countered that no such delay exists and reaffirmed that Muschietti remains attached.
The conflicting statements have only fueled speculation. To make matters worse, Muschietti is stacking his calendar with other projects, including a live-action Attack on Titan adaptation and the sci-fi thriller Drift. That hardly looks like a director laser-focused on Gotham City.
Rumors From the Podcast Circuit
These rumors rose again when The Hot Mic podcast recently claimed Andy Muschietti is no longer directing Batman in The Brave and The Bold. During a fan Q&A, a viewer asked if Muschietti was still attached to the DCU Batman film.
Host John Rocha flatly responded, “I told you he is not doing it! Why don’t you listen?”

Co-host Jeff Sneider sarcastically added, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. This is surely not something John and I have been saying for two years.”
However, Gunn has stated in the past that Muschietti remains attached. The director had also recently been at the Superman premiere and was seen at The Emmy’s with DC Studios co-head Peter Safran.
Still, the speculation highlights the film’s shaky status. The Brave and The Bold currently has no release date, no pre-production timeline, and reports suggest Gunn has been unhappy with the current draft of the script.
The Shadow of The Flash
The biggest obstacle hanging over Muschietti is his last DC film: The Flash. Marketed as DC’s multiverse answer to Spider-Man: No Way Home, the movie turned into one of the most embarrassing box office flops in superhero history. Despite cameos from Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck, audiences simply didn’t show up.

For Warner Bros. Discovery, the loss was staggering, and the finger-pointing hasn’t stopped since.
Muschietti himself offered a muddled postmortem. He blamed the film’s lack of appeal across all four audience quadrants, noting that women in particular did not connect with the character. He also cited superhero fatigue, poor character recognition, and a fractured audience.
Ezra Miller Controversy
Perhaps most notably, Muschietti alternated between defending and blaming star Ezra Miller.
On one hand, the director openly admitted Miller’s numerous arrests and legal controversies had “hurt the movie” and distracted from its release. He also pointed out that the actor’s troubles created a public relations nightmare that Warner Bros. could never quite overcome.

On the other hand, Muschietti continued to show sympathy for Miller, framing the actor’s behavior as stemming from mental health struggles and claiming he was “taking steps” toward recovery. That defense struck many as tone-deaf given the gravity of Miller’s alleged actions.
The result was a director who appeared caught between protecting his star and acknowledging the obvious damage his presence had done.
Gunn’s Calculated Messaging
James Gunn’s insistence that Muschietti is still directing The Brave and The Bold could be genuine — or it could be strategic spin to prevent the impression of instability inside the DCU. Gunn has already stressed that no film is fully greenlit until its script is in place.

With Superman dropping on HBO Max, Supergirl releasing next year, and Gunn starting production soon on his Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow, The Brave and The Bold is far from the front of the production line. An odd choice given the popularity of Batman and his importance to the overall DC universe.
That leaves Muschietti in limbo: attached in name, but without meaningful momentum. And given the history of The Flash, many fans and insiders are skeptical he will ultimately be the man to relaunch Batman for the DCU.
What This Means for DC
The uncertainty around The Brave and The Bold raises deeper questions about Warner Bros. Discovery’s ability to steady its superhero division. The studio has already endured one Batman continuity with Matt Reeves’ The Batman films, which are moving forward separately. Audiences may not have patience for yet another version that arrives late and muddled.

Whether Andy Muschietti stays on board or not, the project has already lost precious time. For a franchise attempting to rebuild its credibility with audiences, every delay risks losing momentum to competitors like Marvel or Sony’s Spider-Verse.
For now, the only clear takeaway is that Batman’s new era in the DCU is off to a rocky and uncertain start.
