Jac Schaeffer, the creator and showrunner of Agatha All Along, is parting ways with Disney. According to an exclusive report from Variety, Schaeffer has signed a three-year television overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

The move comes shortly after Disney reported stronger-than-expected quarterly profitability. On February 2, the company said in an investor meeting that Disney+ and Hulu generated $450 million in operating income last quarter, up 72% from 2024.

Typically, rising profitability can allow streamers greater flexibility in content investment. Schaeffer’s move to a rival streamer may signal a shift in Disney’s approach to content creation and how it selects who will oversee productions.

Schaeffer’s Time at Disney+

Schaeffer orchestrated the introduction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Disney+ with the creation of 2021’s WandaVision. The show featured Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their roles as Wanda and Vision, and was one of the first hits for the streaming service. Its blend of classic TV tropes and superhero drama was recognized for its originality and earned 23 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.

Next, Schaeffer created Agatha All Along, a spinoff of WandaVision, which focused on Kathryn Hahn’s character Agatha Harkness. While the show was a critical success and nominated for many awards, general audiences rejected it. Luminate’s 2024 Film and TV Report revealed that Agatha All Along was one of the least-watched Marvel series of all time. Worse yet, it was still the third most-watched show on Disney+ for that year.

Many noted that Schaeffer’s series was a deconstruction of the traditional family dynamics. At a fan event during the show’s run, Schaeffer confirmed that Agatha’s son was conceived without a father’s involvement, but that she didn’t want to get into “hows and whys of it.”

Most recently, Schaeffer directed the pilot episode for a gender-swapped reimaging of Holes for Disney+. The streamer decided not to move forward on the project.

The Amazon MGM Studios Deal

Under her deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Schaeffer will develop, write, executive produce, and direct original content for the streaming giant. It follows a pattern of creative talent moving from one studio to another as contracts come up for renewal. Paramount+ showrunner Taylor Sheridan recently signed a deal that will take him to NBCUniversal in 2029. Meanwhile, the Duffer Brothers, who created Stranger Things for Netflix, also signed an exclusive deal with Paramount.

Whether Disney sought to retain Schaeffer is unclear, as overall deals frequently shift when contracts expire. That said, her post-WandaVision projects have not matched the viewership impact of her Disney+ debut.

At the same time, Disney+ has announced several initiatives that suggest experimentation with new content formats.

New Content Initiatives at Disney+

In December 2025, Disney committed to a massive $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI. Under the three-year licensing deal, OpenAI’s Sora video generator will be permitted to make short, user-prompted videos featuring Disney’s most popular characters that do not feature an actor’s voice or likeness. Additionally, Disney+ is set to feature curated selections of Sora-generated fan-inspired videos.

More recently, the company announced that it plans to incorporate social-media-style vertical videos on Disney+. Much of that will likely be user-generated AI content, though Disney has yet to confirm any relationship between the two upcoming offerings. While there is no direct link between Schaeffer’s departure and Disney’s AI initiatives, both developments point to a period of experimentation in how the company produces and distributes content.

As streaming services aim to maximize viewer engagement and retention, incorporating user-created short-form content may be a cost-effective way of doing so. If Disney+ continues to expand short-form and user-generated initiatives, it could gradually rebalance its investment between traditional long-form series and alternative content formats.

Some Loser

Yeah, of course amazon would want someone to make more gay, woke content for them. As if they don’t have enough as is.
