Actor and comedian Jack Black has reported that entertainer Donald Glover actively pursued the role of Yoshi in the upcoming animated film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Black’s comment offers insight into casting dynamics for the sequel, which is scheduled for U.S. release on April 1, 2026.

In an interview with ExtraTV, Black said Glover instructed his agent to contact Illumination, the animation studio producing the film, to express that he “really wanted” to voice Yoshi. Black said his costar is a big fan of the Nintendo stories, “He loves it and he loves that universe.” Black commented how “lucky” they were to have Glover join the project.

Glover is widely known for his work in television, film, and music. He has received numerous industry awards, including Emmy and Grammy Awards, and has performed both acting and creative roles in projects such as Atlanta and his music career under the name Childish Gambino.

The Upcoming Sequel

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie brings back several returning actors from the 2023 original while adding new voices. Chris Pratt returns as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor‑Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Keegan‑Michael Key reprises Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson returns as Kamek. New cast members include Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., and Glenn Powell as Fox McCloud.

The first film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide, setting a record as the highest‑grossing video game adaptation and one of the top animated releases of 2023. It also became the highest-grossing film in Illumination’s portfolio at the time and earned recognition in the Guinness World Records for its box office performance.

Context

Industry observers have pointed out that vocal casting for established characters like Yoshi often involves balancing characters’ iconic status with creative objectives set by production teams. While the choice of high‑profile actors can draw attention, it may also invite discussion among fans of the original properties.

Black’s description of Glover’s approach to securing the part adds a behind‑the‑scenes perspective on casting choices, illustrating how performers sometimes pursue specific roles ahead of official announcements. The comment contributes to broader awareness of how voice acting opportunities in major animated films can be shaped by personal interest and professional initiative.

The film’s cast and release details continue to be featured in media outlets as promotion for the April 1, 2026, theatrical debut continues.
