Nintendo fans have already watched Mario and Luigi explore the Mushroom Kingdom in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This week, the plumber brothers are set to embark on a cosmic adventure in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. But one member of the cast wouldn’t mind dialing things back for a smaller—though no less fantastic—spinoff.
In a recent interview, Luigi voice actor Charlie Day said he’d love to see a Luigi’s Mansion movie become a reality.
Not Quite Horror—But Close
“I would be thrilled to do Luigi’s Mansion, just because it’s such a fun game,” Day told ScreenRant while promoting the new Mario Bros. film. He added that the tone wouldn’t need to be excessively spooky. “Not that you would make it like a horror movie for kids,” he said. “But it could have some more sort of jump scares in it, which would be fun.”

Day’s co-stars, Keegan-Michael Key and Anya Taylor-Joy, joked along, agreeing that everyone enjoys a good jump scare. “Especially three-year-olds,” Taylor-Joy quipped.
“It does seem like it would make a great movie,” Day concluded. Still, he was quick to acknowledge that the decision is ultimately out of his hands. “They don’t put me in charge of movie studios—and for good reason. I got no idea.”
If Nintendo and Illumination—the studio behind the Mario Bros. films—decide to move forward, they may already have a built-in fanbase.
From Tech Demo to Fan Favorite
The Luigi’s Mansion series puts the focus on Luigi—a contrast to many Nintendo titles that center on his more famous brother. The original entry began as a technical demo designed to showcase the power of the Nintendo GameCube. It eventually evolved into a full release and became one of the console’s best-selling titles. While some players initially criticized it for its shorter length, the game later developed a strong cult following, leading to spin-offs, remakes, and remasters across multiple platforms.

As the timid plumber, gamers are tasked with exploring haunted locations armed with little more than a ghost-sucking vacuum—the Poltergust—and a flashlight. The gameplay leans heavily on puzzle-solving, with the occasional ghost encounter adding bursts of action along the way.
The series’ popularity even gets a nod in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Early on, when Luigi stumbles into the Darklands, he clutches a flashlight and hums the franchise’s signature theme—a clear wink to fans. Charlie Day also leans into the reference, briefly matching Luigi’s nervous inflection from Luigi’s Mansion as he calls out for Mario.

Charlie Day Is All In
Finding the right story for a Luigi’s Mansion movie won’t be easy. But with the Mario franchise surging at the box office, the path forward is clear. As Nintendo and Illumination look to build on that momentum, more sequels—and likely a few spinoffs—feel inevitable.

For his part, Charlie Day sounds ready. “Yeah, it’d be a lot of pressure,” he admitted, channeling Luigi’s trademark nerves. “But if they do it, I’m in.” If that call ever comes, Luigi may finally step out of Mario’s shadow, grab his flashlight, and take the spotlight for himself.
