Several prominent figures within the entertainment industry are protesting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Texas. Pedro Pascal, Mark Ruffalo, Madonna, and others have added their names to a widely circulated Change.org petition.

While the effort may prove largely symbolic rather than materially effective, critics argue it aligns closely with these celebrities’ established public personas. It also underscores the importance many of them place on using their platforms to engage with high-profile social issues.

Whether the U.S. government ultimately takes notice or responds in any meaningful way remains unclear. Audience reaction, too, is uncertain and likely to vary widely across political and cultural lines.

What They Want from the Federal Government

The petition, titled “Close Dilley ICE Detention Center: Protect Children,” opens with the assertion that “No child should be locked in an immigration detention center.” Signatories call for the immediate closure of the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas, citing court filings about living conditions as justification for federal action.

They go on to urge “the federal government and CoreCivic to close the Dilley facility immediately, return children and families to the homes and communities they were taken from, and end child imprisonment now.” The letter concludes with demands for “transparency, accountability, and systemic reforms.” The open letter argues these steps are necessary to prevent similar abuses nationwide.

At the time of writing, the petition has accumulated more than 8,000 signatures.

Ms. Rachel Gets Political

Pascal, Ruffalo, and Madonna are not the only recognizable figures lending their support to the ongoing protest. Others include Brandi Carlile, Keke Palmer, Katie Couric, Susan Sarandon, and several additional public figures.

The Texas detention facility has also come under increased scrutiny in recent days. Prominent children’s YouTuber Rachel Accurso, better known as Ms. Rachel, has conducted video calls with some of the young detainees.

Stepping further into a public advocacy role, Accurso told NBC News, “I am political. It’s political to believe that children are worthy of love and care, that every child is equal, and that our concern should not stop at appearance, family, religion, or national borders.”

A Broader Industry Trend

Immigration policy remains a complex and politically charged issue. However, the current administration’s handling of customs enforcement has become a prominent talking point in Hollywood. ICE was a recurring topic at the most recent Sundance Film Festival. Figures like Natalie Portman, Olivia Wilde, and Edward Norton—who have not signed this latest petition—used the platform to draw attention to the broader national debate.

Similarly, this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony touched on immigration several times. In his acceptance speech, singer Bad Bunny stated, “We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens—we are humans, and we are Americans.” While he did not mention ICE directly, the broader implication was difficult to miss.

Public Protest vs. Silence

For figures like Pascal, Ruffalo, and Madonna, protest has become closely intertwined with their public identities. Fans who hold differing views may find it increasingly difficult to separate the art from the artist. This stands in notable contrast to actors like Tom Cruise and Ryan Gosling, who have largely remained silent on social and political issues despite their significant box office appeal.

Whether it is more beneficial for long-term career success to openly protest government policy or to remain publicly neutral will remain an open question. As the boundaries between entertainment, advocacy, and personal branding continue to blur, audiences are left to decide not only what they watch, but who they choose to support.

They would rather the children be sold into s*x slavery instead of being taken care of until their status can be assessed. Are only stupid people celebrities, or does celebrity cause brain damage?

Maybe we can get all the crazy in one place and have an “accident”.

They talk as if the first choice is to detain kids. I’m pretty sure most people’s first response wouldn’t be “put ’em in jail” but rules are rules. The first choice is to not have them come to the border to begin with. Barring that children are no less bound by law than any other demographic and the process has walk through the steps.
