The first wave of reviews for Masters of the Universe has arrived, and the film is currently sitting at a respectable 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Under normal circumstances, that would be viewed as good news for Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel. A score comfortably in Fresh territory suggests critics generally enjoyed what they saw. However, in today’s entertainment landscape, many moviegoers have become increasingly skeptical of Hollywood critic scores, leading some fans to ask an unusual question:

Is a strong Rotten Tomatoes score from entertainment media actually a positive sign anymore?

Masters of the Universe Starts Strong With Critics

According to Rotten Tomatoes, Masters of the Universe debuted with a 78% score from professional critics, earning the coveted Fresh designation.

Several outlets praised the film’s humor, action, and overall tone. IGN awarded the movie an 8 out of 10, with reviewer Clint Gage writing that Masters of the Universe was “funnier than I expected” while praising its blend of fantasy adventure and comedy (and calling He-Man a “stupid name”).

On the surface, those reviews appear encouraging. Yet many fans are no longer convinced that critic approval translates into audience satisfaction.

That’s because the gap between professional critics and everyday moviegoers appears to be growing wider every year.

Critics and Audiences Have Increasingly Drifted Apart

Over the last decade, some of the biggest success stories in entertainment have come from projects that critics initially dismissed.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie famously debuted with a Rotten Tomatoes score that left many journalists unimpressed (same with its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie). Audiences, however, turned out in massive numbers, helping the film become one of the biggest animated hits in history.

More recently, Michael received a much cooler reception from critics than many supporters expected, yet audience enthusiasm helped propel the film into becoming one of the biggest box office success stories of the year.

The reverse has happened as well.

Films embraced by entertainment journalists have frequently struggled to generate the same excitement among paying customers. Critics showered praise on projects like Ironheart and Cuties but audiences famously hated these projects.

As a result, many fans now view critic scores less as recommendations and more as indicators of whether a movie aligns with the tastes of the entertainment press.

Some Fans Were Already Concerned About Masters of the Universe

The positive reviews also arrive against the backdrop of concerns that have followed the film for months.

A number of longtime He-Man fans became uneasy after comments from members of the cast and creative team discussing themes such as “toxic masculinity” during promotional interviews.

For many fans, Masters of the Universe represents a classic fantasy adventure built around heroism, strength, courage, and the eternal battle between He-Man and Skeletor. Discussions about modern social themes raised fears that the adaptation might prioritize contemporary messaging over faithfully bringing Eternia to life.

Those concerns may ultimately prove unfounded. A Rotten Tomatoes score doesn’t reveal exactly how audiences will react once the film opens nationwide.

However, for viewers already skeptical of Hollywood’s entertainment media, the enthusiastic response from critics is unlikely to ease those concerns.

In some circles, it may actually intensify them.

The Audience Score Could Tell a Very Different Story

Ultimately, the audience score will likely matter far more than the critic score.

Social media reactions to the 78% rating already show a mix of excitement, skepticism, and outright dismissal of Rotten Tomatoes as a useful measure of quality. Some fans celebrated the score, while others argued they’ve stopped paying attention to critic reviews altogether.

That leaves Masters of the Universe facing the same challenge confronting nearly every major franchise release in 2026.

Can it connect with audiences?

A 78% Rotten Tomatoes score would have once been viewed as an unquestionable victory. Today, after years of high-profile disagreements between critics and moviegoers, many fans are waiting for audience reactions before deciding whether Masters of the Universe is truly worthy of the Power of Grayskull.
