Disney’s latest Star Wars movie disaster just received more bad news, and this time the numbers are even worse than originally reported. When early estimates for the film’s second weekend arrived, The Mandalorian and Grogu appeared headed for a painful 69%  box office decline from its opening weekend.

That figure alone would have ranked among the worst second-weekend drops in franchise history.

Unfortunately for Disney and Lucasfilm, the final weekend actuals revealed an even steeper fall.

Instead of a 69% drop, The Mandalorian and Grogu ultimately plunged 70.1%, grossing just $24.4 million during its second three-day weekend and setting a new record for the worst second-weekend decline ever recorded by a live-action Star Wars film at the domestic box office.

Weekend Actuals Made The Mandalorian and Grogu Box Office Performance Even Worse

Studios typically hope that final weekend actuals will improve upon initial estimates.

Sometimes ticket sales come in slightly higher than projected. Other times they remain essentially unchanged.

That wasn’t the case here.

Heading into the weekend, most projections suggested the film would finish around $25 million domestically, translating to roughly a 69% drop from opening weekend.

When the final numbers were released, however, The Mandalorian and Grogu came in lower than expected at $24.4 million.

While the difference may appear relatively small, it was enough to push the movie past the 70% threshold and into record-setting territory.

For a franchise that once seemed virtually unstoppable at the box office, it’s another alarming sign that audience enthusiasm for Disney’s version of Star Wars remains far below where the company likely expected.

The Film Has Fallen Harder Than Solo

For years, Solo: A Star Wars Story has been viewed as the low-water mark for Disney’s theatrical Star Wars efforts.

Released in 2018, the film struggled to generate excitement after the divisive reception to The Last Jedi. It ultimately posted a 65.2% second-weekend decline and became the first modern Star Wars film to significantly miss expectations.

Yet even Solo held better than The Mandalorian and Grogu.

With its newly confirmed 70.1% second-weekend drop, Disney’s latest release has officially surpassed Solo for the steepest second-weekend decline ever recorded by a live-action Star Wars movie.

That comparison is particularly notable because Disney spent years promoting Din Djarin and Grogu as the future of the franchise. The duo became the face of Lucasfilm’s Disney+ strategy and were often cited as proof that audiences still cared about Star Wars.

Now their first theatrical adventure is breaking box office records for all the wrong reasons.

The Lowest Disney Star Wars Opening Weekend Keeps Looking Worse

The second-weekend collapse comes on the heels of another disappointing development.

Updated opening weekend actuals recently confirmed that The Mandalorian and Grogu failed to reach the $100 million domestic mark during its extended Memorial Day debut.

That adjustment officially made it the lowest-opening live-action Star Wars movie of the Disney era.

At the time, some analysts suggested the film could still recover if audience word-of-mouth proved strong.

Instead, the second weekend delivered exactly the opposite signal.

Strong audience recommendations typically result in steadier holds from weekend to weekend. Massive drops often indicate that opening weekend curiosity is not translating into sustained interest.

A decline exceeding 70% suggests that many moviegoers simply did not view the film as a must-see theatrical event.

The Movie Has Already Fallen To Third Place

Adding to the concerns is the fact that The Mandalorian and Grogu couldn’t even maintain a top-two position during its second weekend.

The film slipped to third place at the domestic box office behind both Obsession and Backrooms.

That’s a remarkable development for a franchise that once dominated theaters and routinely turned every new release into a cultural event.

Instead of serving as the unquestioned blockbuster of the moment, Disney’s latest Star Wars installment is already being overtaken by newer competition after only two weekends in release.

Can The Mandalorian and Grogu Reach $200 Million Domestic?

The next question facing Lucasfilm is whether the movie can even reach $200 million domestically before the end of its run.

Following two weekends in theaters, the film’s domestic total stands at approximately $136.8 million.

Not long ago, a live-action Star Wars movie finishing below $200 million in North America would have seemed impossible.

Now, some box office observers are projecting a final domestic total somewhere between $185 million and $195 million.

Should those forecasts prove accurate, The Mandalorian and Grogu would become the first live-action Star Wars movie ever to finish below the $200 million domestic milestone.

Disney’s Star Wars Problems Are Becoming Harder To Ignore

The most damaging aspect of this latest development may be that the story actually became worse once the final numbers arrived.

A 69% second-weekend drop would have already been a troubling result even worse tan Solo. A 70.1% drop makes franchise history and pushes this failure to a whole new level.

After seven years away from theaters, Disney hoped The Mandalorian and Grogu would mark a triumphant return for Star Wars on the big screen. Instead, the film now holds the record for the worst second-weekend decline in the history of the franchise’s live-action releases.

And with questions continuing to swirl about the long-term health of the brand, the box office trajectory is becoming increasingly difficult for Lucasfilm to dismiss.
