John Oliver is weighing in on the controversy surrounding Scott Pelley’s dismissal from CBS News. During a recent episode of Last Week Tonight, the HBO host mocked the circumstances surrounding Pelley’s firing from 60 Minutes, joking that the veteran journalist’s real offense was being “too cool.”

The comment comes at an interesting moment. Paramount, the parent company of CBS, is set to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns HBO. Oliver has been among the most outspoken critics of the proposed merger.
Oliver Defends Pelley
In the first joke of his opening monologue, Oliver referenced reports that Pelley was terminated after a contentious meeting with network leadership.
“Apparently Scott Pelley was fired for being too cool in a meeting,” Oliver joked.
According to Deadline, a staff meeting was called to introduce Nick Bilton as the new executive producer of 60 Minutes. In audio obtained by The New York Times, Pelley can be heard accusing CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss—who was reportedly not present—of “murdering 60 Minutes.” The reporter went on to claim that Weiss “does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it, and she’s been doing exactly that.”

Continuing his outburst, Pelley reportedly added, “She has no qualifications for her job; you have slender qualifications for this job. The changes that she’s made at the Evening News have been catastrophic, so why should we expect that any of this is going to be any better?”
While John Oliver framed Scott Pelley’s comments as being “too cool,” CBS leadership clearly saw the situation differently.
More Than a Bad Meeting?
Reports suggest Pelley’s remarks were only part of a broader conflict between the veteran journalist and CBS leadership. In subsequent interviews, Pelley has criticized the network’s direction and suggested that management does not understand what made 60 Minutes successful.
Speaking with The New York Times after he was fired, Pelley expressed surprise at the decision. He said that when he was called into a meeting with CBS News president Tom Cibrowski, getting fired was the “furthest thing from my mind.”

Supporters have portrayed the firing as retaliation against a respected journalist who spoke his mind. Critics, however, argue that openly attacking colleagues and questioning their qualifications during a staff meeting would create problems in almost any workplace.
One of the reasons why trust in media is so low is because many legacy journalists are completely out of touch.
You could not get away with that behavior at any run of the mill job. It is revealing to see how blind some are to that.

Additionally, FCC Chair Brendan Carr weighed in on social media, calling Pelley “out of touch” and noting that “You could not get away with that behavior at any run of the mill job. It is revealing to see how blind some are to that.”
Oliver’s Own Paramount Problem
For now, John Oliver is standing with Scott Pelley against CBS.

After Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders approved a merger with Paramount, Oliver expressed his dismay. “Yeah, not great news,” he said during his late show. “In fact, if I may quote anyone who’s ever accidentally sat on their Roku remote, I’m in Paramount now…how the f-ck do I get out of here?'”
It remains to be seen whether the incoming Paramount leadership intends to make changes to HBO’s late-night lineup. If that happens, Oliver may find himself facing some of the same corporate realities that Pelley’s supporters now criticize. Whether he chooses to be “too cool” in those meetings remains an open question.
