On Thursday, Pixar announced that it had signed Mark Ruffalo for a major role in its next feature film.

According to Variety, the Marvel star will voice Nero in Pixar’s upcoming animated feature Gatto. The film’s logline states that “after years of maneuvering the canal-ridden, superstitious city of Venice, Italy, Nero begins to question whether he’s lived the right lives.”

The announcement comes as Ruffalo continues to campaign against the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. While the actor has recently become one of Hollywood’s most vocal critics of media consolidation, some observers are questioning whether his activism has been applied consistently.

Ruffalo Leads Opposition To Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger

In April, the actor and activist spoke before the U.S. Senate. Ruffalo argued that if the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger goes through, its effects would ripple far beyond Hollywood.

“The merger threatens more than our livelihoods,” Ruffalo said. “It threatens one of the world’s most vital industries.”

Weeks later, Ruffalo co-authored a New York Times opinion piece arguing that media consolidation threatens creative opportunities and reduces competition throughout the entertainment industry. He claimed that many people within the industry are afraid to speak out for fear of losing work. As an example, Ruffalo suggested he may have already lost an opportunity with CNN because of concerns that his activism could create friction with its future parent company.

The new deal between Mark Ruffalo and Pixar, however, suggests that any professional consequences are not industry-wide.

Critics Question The Consistency

Some commentators have noted that Ruffalo did not launch a similar public campaign during Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. That contrast has not gone unnoticed.

Completed in 2019, the deal significantly expanded Disney’s control over the entertainment landscape. It brought major film franchises, television assets, and intellectual property under Disney’s umbrella while further strengthening the company’s position within Hollywood.

Many of Ruffalo’s critics argue that his opposition is less about consolidation itself and more about the political implications of the Paramount-Warner Bros. deal. The Ellison family, which is spearheading the merger, is believed by many critics to have ties to President Donald Trump. That has fueled concerns among some observers that the deal could eventually influence CNN’s editorial direction, similar to concerns raised about changes at CBS News and 60 Minutes.

For his part, Ruffalo has become increasingly outspoken on political issues. In 2025, he attended a No Kings rally. More recently, he joined numerous entertainment figures in signing a petition protesting an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Texas.

Disney Continues To Cast Ruffalo

Regardless of where one stands on the merger debate, Ruffalo’s relationship with Disney remains strong.

The actor has portrayed Bruce Banner and the Hulk throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade. Despite his frequent political activism and recent criticism of corporate consolidation, Disney continues to cast him in high-profile projects.

Gatto now represents Mark Ruffalo’s latest collaboration with the Disney-owned Pixar.

That reality has fueled debate among critics who argue that Hollywood’s activism often becomes more selective when it involves the industry’s most powerful players.

As Ruffalo prepares to headline Pixar’s next major release, questions surrounding the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger will continue. So too will questions about whether Hollywood’s loudest critics of consolidation apply the same standards to every studio—or only to some of them.
