For decades, the selection of the next actor to play James Bond has been one of the most hotly debated topics among movie fans. Now, as Amazon MGM Studios prepares to reboot the iconic franchise with a new leading man, the question of who should inherit the role of Britain’s most famous secret agent is once again drawing significant attention.

Longtime James Bond casting director Debbie McWilliams recently weighed in on the debate. Speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, McWilliams said she does not believe 007 should be reimagined as either a woman or a person of color.
McWilliams Defends Ian Fleming’s Vision
McWilliams served as the James Bond franchise’s casting director for four decades, beginning with For Your Eyes Only in 1981. During that time, she played a key role in selecting the last three actors—Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig—to portray the iconic spy.
According to Variety, when asked whether Bond could be played by a woman or a non-white actor, McWilliams’ answer was brief and unequivocal: “Not in my opinion. No.”
Expanding on her answer, the former Bond casting director said, “Ian Fleming wrote a character, and that’s the character that stays. That’s what I think. I mean, other people might think otherwise, but I don’t think that.”
In a separate interview with The Independent, McWilliams defended that position even more forcefully by arguing that literary characters should remain faithful to their creators’ original vision.

“They haven’t changed Harry Potter to Alice Potter or to a different ethnicity,” she said. “That’s how it was written and that’s how it should remain, I believe.”
The observation comes at an interesting time. Recent casting decisions involving Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Severus Snape in HBO’s Harry Potter series suggest Hollywood has become increasingly willing to race-swap established literary characters. That trend has led some fans to speculate Amazon MGM Studios could eventually do the same with Bond.
McWilliams clearly does not agree—and she’s not alone.
Idris Elba Made a Similar Argument
Her remarks echo comments made by Idris Elba, who spent years as one of the most frequently rumored candidates to succeed Daniel Craig. Despite widespread fan campaigns supporting the idea, Elba said he never believed he would actually be offered the role.
“I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing,” Elba said. “James Bond was written how he was written for a reason.”

While critics argue that some casting decisions are made to “send a message” to audiences, Elba believes the Bond franchise works best when it focuses on adventure and escapism.
“Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke,” Elba said. “I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”
The Search for the Next James Bond Continues
Although McWilliams has retired from the franchise and no longer has any role in casting the next James Bond, her opinion still carries considerable weight. As for who should receive the license to kill next, she told The Independent that it is “absolutely essential that he retains a total enigma.” Rather than casting an established celebrity, she would prefer to see a lesser-known actor take on the role.

Speaking to the audience in Karlovy Vary, McWilliams acknowledged that finding the right James Bond has never been an easy task.
“There’s no set rule. It’s whoever fits the bill, frankly, and it will be different for different directors and different producers,” McWilliams said. “And, you know, it’s about to change dramatically, is all I can say. And I’m not sure whether I’ll be paying my money to go and see it or not. But there isn’t an easy answer to that question.”
