Halo: Campaign Evolved has failed to make a meaningful impact on Steam, recording a dramatically smaller launch than Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

According to SteamDB, the remake peaked at 25,376 concurrent players on July 29, approximately one day after its general release. That number has since fallen considerably, with the game attracting around 7,500 players at the time of writing.

The performance falls far below the franchise’s two biggest Steam releases. Halo Infinite reached an all-time peak of 272,586 concurrent players, although its multiplayer component was free to play. Halo: The Master Chief Collection peaked at 161,024 players following its 2019 Steam debut. Like films, games generally attract their greatest interest around launch before audiences begin to taper off.

Campaign Evolved also currently holds a “Mixed” rating on Steam. Approximately 66% of its more than 8,000 user reviews are positive.

A Disappointing Return for Master Chief

Halo Studios rebuilt the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign in Unreal Engine 5, adding updated graphics, re-recorded dialogue, new weapons, expanded cooperative play, and three original prequel missions.

However, the remake does not include competitive multiplayer. That may have limited its appeal, particularly when The Master Chief Collection includes six Halo games and can frequently be purchased at a substantial discount.

The Steam numbers do not represent the game’s entire audience. Campaign Evolved is also available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC through Game Pass. Its inclusion with Microsoft’s subscription service almost certainly reduced the number of players purchasing it directly through Steam.

Nevertheless, 25,376 concurrent players is a disappointing result for the remake of one of Xbox’s most important and iconic games.

Controversies and Technical Problems Overshadow Launch

Campaign Evolved also arrived amid complaints about its creative changes and technical condition.

Some longtime fans objected to Cortana’s redesign and alterations made to the crew of the Pillar of Autumn. One replaced character was based on Bungie engineer Matt Segur, who programmed the original game’s audio engine.

Players also circulated videos showing certain female NPCs apparently surviving repeated gunfire while male characters could still be killed. Subsequent testing suggested that the behavior was most likely caused by a hitbox or collision bug rather than an intentional design choice.

Other reported problems included crashes, stuttering, inconsistent frame pacing, Microsoft account authentication failures, and premium content that did not unlock correctly. Some early-access customers were initially unable to launch the game because Steam opened its digital art book instead.

An Unexpected Steam Tag

Discussion surrounding Campaign Evolved took another surprising turn when users noticed that it had been categorized as an LGBTQ+ game on the Steam storefront. Nothing in the title’s marketing indicated that it would feature those themes.

Because Steam tags are based on user feedback, the label raised questions about why it appeared so soon after launch. Within 24 hours, the tag was removed without an official explanation.

Although the potentially misleading tag was unlikely to have affected the game’s performance, reports of controversial changes and technical problems may help explain its poor Steam debut. Gamers may also be unwilling to pay new-release prices for remakes of legacy titles. Microsoft may eventually attract a much larger audience across Xbox, PlayStation, and Game Pass. On Steam, however, Campaign Evolved has failed to deliver the triumphant revival that Halo Studios presumably wanted.
