Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t just having a strong opening—it’s rewriting the box office record books.
After already shattering the all-time Thursday preview record with an estimated $72 million, the Tom Holland-led sequel is now tracking for an astonishing $167 million to $173 million opening day in North America, according to industry estimates. If those numbers hold, Brand New Day will surpass the previous first-day record of $157.4 million set by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
The numbers are so large that Hollywood is now watching to see whether Sony can challenge one of the most untouchable records in modern box office history.
Sony Could Challenge Avengers: Endgame’s Opening Weekend Record
While projections continue to fluctuate throughout Friday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now expected to open somewhere north of $330 million domestically, with several analysts believing a finish between $340 million and $350 million is possible if audience demand remains as strong through Saturday.

That would put the film within striking distance of Avengers: Endgame‘s legendary $357.1 million domestic opening weekend.
Even if it ultimately falls short of that milestone, the film would still comfortably become the second-largest domestic opening weekend in history, surpassing Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s $260.1 million debut by an enormous margin.
For Sony, that’s a remarkable achievement considering the company controls distribution of the film despite its partnership with Marvel Studios.
It Did It Without IMAX
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Brand New Day‘s performance is what it didn’t have.
Unlike most modern event films, the movie launched without IMAX screens, as Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continues occupying the premium format.

Normally, losing IMAX would significantly limit a blockbuster’s opening weekend ceiling. Premium large-format screens command higher ticket prices and often account for a meaningful percentage of opening weekend revenue.
Instead, audiences simply packed Dolby Cinema, ScreenX, 4DX, and standard auditoriums.
According to industry estimates, 4DX alone is expected to generate roughly $4 million this weekend, while ScreenX is projected to contribute another $4 million, helping offset the absence of IMAX.
The performance reinforces just how extraordinary audience demand has become for the film.
The Weekend Could Break More Than One Record
It’s not just Spider-Man setting records.
With The Odyssey continuing to perform exceptionally well in its third weekend while Brand New Day explodes onto the scene, the overall domestic marketplace is expected to produce one of the biggest weekends in theatrical history.

Industry projections suggest North American theaters could collectively generate more than $400 million, potentially surpassing the previous overall marketplace record established during Avengers: Endgame‘s opening weekend.
After several years of questions surrounding the health of theatrical exhibition, the final weekend of July is shaping up to be one of the strongest demonstrations yet that audiences will still turn out in massive numbers when studios deliver films people are excited to see.
Sony Delivers Another Massive Spider-Man Win
For Sony, Spider-Man: Brand New Day represents another enormous victory for one of Hollywood’s most valuable franchises.
The film has already:
- Broken the all-time Thursday preview record with approximately $72 million.
- Is tracking for the biggest opening day in North American box office history.
- Could become the second-largest domestic opening weekend ever, with an outside chance of overtaking Avengers: Endgame.
- Accomplished all of it without IMAX screens, a hurdle that would typically suppress a blockbuster’s opening weekend.
