The Soska Sisters have fueled speculation that they may be preparing to bring their distinctive brand of horror to Scream 8.

On August 11, Jen and Sylvia Soska responded to a social media rumor connecting them to the next installment in the long-running slasher franchise. Although the filmmakers stopped short of confirming their involvement, their cryptic “wide eyes” emoji quickly attracted the attention of Scream fans.

Their response could indicate that discussions are underway. However, it could just as easily mean that the sisters are having fun with their followers or publicly expressing interest in the job. Paramount and Spyglass have not announced a director for Scream 8, and no major Hollywood trade has confirmed that the Soskas are negotiating for the position.

The Soska Sisters Address the Rumor

The Canadian filmmaking duo, sometimes called the “Twisted Twins,” have developed a devoted following through their work in independent horror. They have also established themselves in comics, previously writing for Marvel and currently working with Rippaverse Comics, where they have two ongoing series. Among them is Bloodruth, a horror title centered on supernatural evil.

Their movies are frequently characterized by graphic violence, body horror, and provocative subject matter. Those qualities could allow them to bring a more visceral style to Scream, although the franchise has traditionally balanced its kills with self-aware humor and commentary about horror movies.

The sisters have never directed a theatrical production on the scale of a modern Scream sequel. However, following the surprise success of this year’s Obsession and Backrooms from YouTube filmmakers, studios may be more willing to look beyond the traditional Hollywood system for emerging talent.

In a statement provided to Geeks + Gamers, the Soska Sisters expressed their admiration for the Scream franchise.

“We have been fans since the first film and we believe that’s who you need to make these films. Horror fans live, eat, and breathe this genre. Scream fans are notably the smartest and we fans have high expectations with each instalment,” they wrote. “It is a huge responsibility to follow in the footsteps of what the great Wes Craven created. We were the first to remake a Cronenberg film, we just made a sequel to Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, and we have been looking for the next master of horror’s work to honor.”

While neither a confirmation nor a denial, the statement leaves the door open to their involvement.

Kevin Williamson Will Not Direct Scream 8

The directing position became available after Kevin Williamson revealed that he does not expect to return behind the camera.

Williamson, who wrote the original Scream and directed Scream 7, said he would probably “step back and just be a part of the family again” for the next installment. He also expressed interest in seeing another storyteller take control of the series.

“I have some ideas of where it could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it,” Williamson said last spring.

Spyglass is officially developing Scream 8, with sisters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman writing the screenplay. The pair previously worked together on television series including Poker Face, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Prodigal Son.

However, their most recent project, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, was rejected by Hulu. The pilot script reportedly featured clumsy dialogue and failed to properly capture the spirit of the original series.

Who Will Return for Scream 8?

No casting information for Scream 8 has been announced. However, the record-breaking commercial performance of Scream 7 makes Neve Campbell’s return as Sidney Prescott appear increasingly likely.

For now, the Soska Sisters are playing coy about potentially taking over directing duties. However, their willingness to engage with the rumor ensures that their names will remain part of the conversation until Paramount and Spyglass reveal who will guide Ghostface’s next killing spree.
