Marvel Studios appears to have found another member of its new X-Men team.

According to Variety, Gen V star Asa Germann is set to play Warren Worthington III, better known to comic book fans as Angel, in the upcoming MCU reboot.

Interestingly, The Hollywood Reporter says Germann was previously among the actors considered to play Cyclops. That role ultimately went to Heartstopper star Kit Connor, but Marvel apparently liked Germann enough to find another place for him on the team.

The 28-year-old actor is best known for playing Sam Riordan in Gen V, Amazon’s recently canceled spinoff of The Boys. He also appeared earlier this year in Scream 7.

While Marvel has yet to officially confirm the casting, Germann’s addition would give the studio another member of the original X-Men lineup.

One of Marvel’s Original Mutants

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Warren Worthington III debuted alongside Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, and Iceman in 1963’s X-Men #1.

Born into an extremely wealthy family, Worthington develops a pair of large, feathered wings that give him the ability to fly. After initially hiding his mutation, he eventually joins Professor Charles Xavier’s team as Angel.

However, the character’s most dramatic transformation came decades later.

After losing his wings, Worthington falls under the influence of Apocalypse, who transforms him into one of his Four Horsemen. His feathered wings are replaced by metallic ones capable of launching razor-sharp projectiles, turning Angel into the considerably more dangerous Archangel.

Germann will be the third actor to portray the character in a live-action X-Men movie.

Ben Foster played Warren Worthington III in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, where his father’s attempt to “cure” his mutation played into the movie’s larger conflict.

Ben Hardy later portrayed a very different version of Angel in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. That incarnation became one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen and received metallic wings, although he was killed before the end of the film.

Marvel’s X-Men Team Continues to Grow

Germann joins an increasingly large cast assembled by Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier.

Marvel officially revealed much of the team at D23 last month, confirming Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Maya Boyd as Storm, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost.

Can Marvel Make Angel Work?

Reactions to Germann’s casting online have been mixed. Some fans have praised his performance as one of the standouts of Gen V, while others have questioned whether he has the charisma necessary to bring Angel to life.

However, Germann’s relatively subdued screen presence could work particularly well if Marvel eventually follows Warren into his darker Archangel storyline.

With many of the newly announced actors on the younger side, the studio also appears to be assembling a cast capable of carrying the franchise for years. Whether this latest version of the X-Men can maintain that momentum where Fox’s franchise often struggled remains to be seen.

Returning to the Original X-Men

The addition of Angel is particularly interesting because it gives Marvel three of the five mutants who comprised the original X-Men team in the comics: Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Angel. Beast and Iceman are currently the only two founding members who have not been announced.

That could be a coincidence, or Marvel may still have additional casting announcements waiting in the wings.

Either way, the roster revealed so far suggests the studio is drawing heavily from the team’s earliest comic-book history while also incorporating prominent later additions such as Storm, Rogue, and Emma Frost.

The still-untitled X-Men movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028.
