Marvel Studios has reportedly found its new Emma Frost.

According to Deadline, Samara Weaving has been selected to play the powerful mutant in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot.

Sources told the outlet that director Jake Schreier and Marvel Studios executives met with numerous actresses while searching for the right person to portray Frost. The role reportedly inspired one of the film’s most extensive casting searches.

A group of finalists was assembled shortly after the Fourth of July. However, Weaving reportedly delivered an audition that proved difficult for the other candidates to beat.

Neither Marvel Studios nor representatives for Samara Weaving have confirmed her casting.

Weaving is technically the first actor reported to have joined the reboot’s principal cast. However, audiences seeing Spider-Man: Brand New Day this weekend may discover that another MCU mutant has already arrived. Meanwhile, Obsession star Inde Navarrette has confirmed meeting with Marvel about joining the lineup.

Marvel did not reveal the X-Men lineup during its recent Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, despite confirming several other upcoming projects.

News of Samara Weaving’s casting as Emma Frost has been overwhelmingly well received online, with many fans claiming that they suggested her for the role years ago. Others jokingly expressed surprise that Sydney Sweeney did not land the part.

Schreier was selected to direct the film following his work on Thunderbolts*. Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo are writing the screenplay.

Plot details remain under wraps. However, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has repeatedly indicated that mutants will become increasingly important to the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Avengers: Secret Wars.

The studio is expected to introduce a new generation of actors as the X-Men rather than indefinitely continue with the cast inherited from 20th Century Fox. Nevertheless, several stars from Fox’s films, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn, are returning for Avengers: Doomsday.

That crossover may provide a final appearance for the previous incarnation of the team before Marvel launches its reboot.

Who Is Emma Frost?

Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne, Emma Frost made her comic-book debut in 1980. Initially introduced as the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, she became one of the X-Men’s most dangerous adversaries.

Frost possesses formidable telepathic abilities and can transform her body into a nearly indestructible organic diamond form. Although she began as a villain, the character eventually became a prominent member and leader of the X-Men. Her complicated loyalties, sharp personality, and willingness to use methods rejected by more idealistic heroes have made her one of the franchise’s most distinctive mutants.

Tahyna Tozzi briefly portrayed a version of Emma Frost in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. January Jones later played the character in X-Men: First Class.

From Scream Queen to White Queen

Weaving is best known for starring in the horror comedy Ready or Not and its sequel, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Although she has primarily worked in mid-budget horror comedies and dark thrillers, the actress has also appeared in higher-profile projects such as Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, Scream VI, and Bill & Ted Face the Music.

Her experience balancing horror, comedy, and action could make her particularly well suited to Frost’s combination of glamour, ruthlessness, and biting wit. With Weaving apparently secured, Marvel’s long-awaited mutant reboot is finally beginning to take shape.
