Peter Parker may be one of Marvel’s most famously downtrodden heroes, but Spider-Man just keeps winning.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially set a new domestic box-office record, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time in North America. The Marvel superhero film claims a title held for more than a decade by Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

While Sony produced Brand New Day—meaning Marvel, and therefore Disney, receives only a share of the profits—the achievement still represents a major win for the MCU. After last year’s Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps drastically underperformed worldwide, many questioned whether Marvel had lost its momentum.

Yet North American audiences turned out for Brand New Day in spectacular numbers.

Spider-Man Sets a New Domestic Record

According to Variety, Brand New Day has earned $936.773 million at the domestic box office in just 47 days.

Tom Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie was breaking records from the start. Brand New Day shattered opening-weekend projections with a $360 million domestic debut. That was enough to surpass the previous record holder, Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $357 million.

Now, it is clear that the film was only getting started.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s latest Marvel film has earned $2.45 billion worldwide so far. It remains to be seen whether Brand New Day can surpass the global totals of Avengers: Endgame and Avatar: The Way of Water to become the highest-grossing film of all time.

The more immediate question is whether it can become the first movie to earn $1 billion at the domestic box office.

Surpassing The Force Awakens

2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens was the previous domestic box-office record holder with more than $936 million. It was the first installment in Disney’s sequel trilogy, and the following films delivered diminishing returns. A long-awaited new Star Wars movie also had years of pent-up fan enthusiasm working in its favor.

That makes the success of Brand New Day even more impressive.

MCU fans had appeared increasingly cautious, often taking a wait-and-see-it-on-streaming approach to new theatrical releases. This is also Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie, not including his appearances in several other MCU projects.

Wary audiences were nevertheless willing to place their trust in Brand New Day. Strong word of mouth and repeat trips to theaters then produced results that speak for themselves.

Star Wars Passes the Crown

In response to Brand New Day breaking the record, the official Star Wars social media account offered a tip of the hat. It posted an image of Spider-Man with his hands raised alongside the message, “The Force is strong with you!”

The caption added, “From a galaxy far, far away, everyone at Lucasfilm sends massive congratulations to Destin, Tom, everyone at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios and the entire team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day on setting a new domestic box office record and taking the crown from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

A Much-Needed Victory for Marvel

One blockbuster cannot erase every concern surrounding the MCU, especially when Spider-Man remains a uniquely dependable attraction.

Still, audiences did not merely show up for Brand New Day during its opening weekend—they kept returning for weeks. If the film reaches $1 billion domestically, it will give Marvel an unprecedented achievement and demonstrate that the right superhero movie can still become a genuine cultural event.
