EA’s DICE and Respawn studios are reportedly teaming up on Star Wars: Battlefront 3, following recent rumors linking Bungie to the sequel.

The report arrives amid a broader restructuring that includes BioWare’s closure and the cancellation of its next Mass Effect game. As one anticipated project ends, another appears to be taking shape within EA.

For Battlefront fans, the news offers firmer grounds for optimism than earlier speculation about potential developers. However, an important question remains: how far has development actually progressed?

DICE and Respawn Reportedly Teaming Up

According to Variety, sources have identified EA’s planned DICE–Respawn collaboration as Star Wars: Battlefront 3.

EA executives have acknowledged the partnership, although their announcement does not name the game.

“We’ll be bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project,” Cam Weber and David Tinson wrote in a memo shared on EA’s website.

That distinction matters. EA has confirmed the collaboration, while the project’s identification as Battlefront 3 comes from reporting.

The news points toward a sequel moving forward within EA. However, the executives’ statement offers little indication of how much development work has already taken place.

Battlefront Report Emerges Amid BioWare Closure

As That Park Place previously reported, EA subsidiary BioWare announced its closure after more than three decades, ending early development of the next Mass Effect.

The studio built its reputation through games including Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age. Its shutdown forms part of a broader restructuring at EA, reportedly affecting approximately 400 jobs, including around 50 at BioWare.

Those changes provide context for the Battlefront report. EA is pursuing a new collaboration between two studios while abandoning the project that had become BioWare’s primary focus.

However, the announcements do not establish that Mass Effect employees or resources are moving to Battlefront. Both developments fall within the broader restructuring, but no transfer between the projects has been confirmed.

What Happened to the Bungie Rumors?

Earlier reporting covered by That Park Place named DICE and Bungie as possible development partners for Lucasfilm.

The rumor originated in Electronic Gaming Monthly’s revived Quartermann column. Jeff Grubb subsequently discussed the claims on Game Mess Mornings, describing exploratory talks rather than established production.

That coverage also included a competing account from Bulkhead Games CEO Joe Brammer. He said he had heard DICE and Respawn were working together on Battlefront 3, aligning with the latest reporting.

Whether Bungie previously held discussions, or how seriously Lucasfilm considered the studio, remains unclear. Nevertheless, the new report provides stronger support for a sequel being developed within EA.

Battlefront 3’s Development Status Remains Unclear

The reported partnership offers a clearer picture of who is making the game, but it does not establish that full production is underway.

Planning, prototyping, and assembling a team can all precede the larger effort required to complete a release. EA’s reference to a “future project” leaves its current development stage uncertain.

That wording alone also cannot establish that work has barely begun. For now, the reporting provides more clarity about the studios involved than the progress they have made.

BioWare’s closure offers a reminder that development does not guarantee a finished game. The latest Battlefront report gives fans reason for encouragement, but expectations about its scope and release timing must wait for more concrete details.
