Elon Musk has reportedly invested approximately $1 billion in Skydance, giving David Ellison’s newly expanded entertainment company another prominent financial backer.
According to Semafor, people familiar with the matter say the investment came together around the same time as equity contributions from other investors, including board member Laurene Powell Jobs. Musk and Paramount did not immediately respond to the outlet’s requests for comment.
The report follows John Malone’s prediction that Musk’s business empire could become a major Skydance partner. However, the reported investment falls well below the figure Malone floated, while his broader vision of a financing and distribution partnership remains unconfirmed.
Musk’s Investment Follows Malone’s Prediction
As previously reported, Malone suggested that a potential investment could reach between $8 billion and $10 billion.
His prediction extended beyond financing. The veteran media executive envisioned a global distribution arrangement involving Skydance and SpaceX, potentially connecting the entertainment company’s programming with Musk’s Starlink satellite network.

Such an agreement would establish a substantially broader relationship than the investment now being reported. Musk’s financial involvement aligns with Malone’s expectations of closer ties, but it does not confirm the full partnership he described.
The roughly $1 billion contribution should therefore be distinguished from the larger commitment Malone anticipated. Neither a SpaceX investment nor a Starlink programming agreement has been established by the latest report.
Musk Deepens His Financial Ties With the Ellisons
The investment adds another connection between Musk and the Ellison family, whose business relationships already span technology and media.
Semafor notes that Larry Ellison invested $1 billion in Musk’s 2022 Twitter acquisition. The Oracle co-founder also invested in Tesla and served on its board.
Now, Musk has reportedly committed a similar amount to David Ellison’s entertainment business as Skydance pursues cost reductions and technological changes.

Those existing ties help explain Malone’s confidence that the two sides could reach an agreement. They also provide a foundation for further cooperation, although the scope of any future partnership remains unclear.
For Musk, a broader arrangement could connect his communications businesses with an extensive film and television library. Depending on its terms, a distribution deal might give Starlink another selling point for subscribers while offering Skydance another route to audiences. Those opportunities remain possibilities rather than announced benefits of the investment.
Hollywood’s Response Remains to Be Seen
Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery brought Paramount, Warner Bros., HBO, CBS, and CNN under the same corporate umbrella, substantially expanding its entertainment and news holdings.
The merger faced opposition from California Attorney General Rob Bonta and eleven other state attorneys general. Actor and activist Mark Ruffalo was also among its most vocal Hollywood critics.

The industry’s response to Musk’s investment has yet to take shape. Beyond calling for public protests against the merger, Ruffalo recently called Musk a “monster” on social media. Musk’s reported financial involvement could become another flashpoint surrounding the already contentious consolidation.
For audiences, however, the investment offers little indication of what will change onscreen. Financial participation alone does not establish authority over casting, scripts, programming, or newsroom decisions.
The practical significance will depend on the terms of Musk’s involvement and whether a broader commercial relationship follows. A distribution agreement would extend his connection to Skydance beyond financial backing, potentially linking its programming with his communications infrastructure.
For Ellison, the investment supplies additional support as he integrates an enormous collection of media assets. Turning that backing into lasting success will still require managing the company’s financial obligations and producing entertainment audiences want to watch.
