Mark Ruffalo Once Effusively Praised Elon Musk and Tesla Before Condemning Him Over Politics

Hollywood actor and activist Mark Ruffalo has resumed condemning Elon Musk on Musk’s own platform. Ruffalo bookended the week with pointed attacks against the tech mogul, alongside posts about political and environmental issues and calls to block the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger.

However, in a classic case of “the internet never forgets,” a resurfaced video from 2014 began circulating online. At the time, Ruffalo had nothing but high praise for the Tesla founder.

Mark Ruffalo Calls Elon Musk a “Monster”

On Monday, Mark Ruffalo tagged Elon Musk in a post on X. The Marvel star directly accused him of causing hundreds of thousands of deaths by supporting the dismantling of USAID.

“You were once going save the world and abolish poverty, instead you have insured the deaths of 100s of thousands. And for what?” Ruffalo wrote. “Your own greed and hubris. You had such potential. Squandered. You are not Iron Man, that’s for sure. You are not a hero. You are kind of a monster.”

Ruffalo cited projections based on a Boston University estimate and a Lancet study reported by The New Yorker. The article claims that 700,000 people have died in the year since Musk worked with the Trump administration through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to freeze USAID funding.

Over the weekend, Ruffalo followed up with a second post featuring a political cartoon from The Seattle Times. The image shows Musk eating an extravagant meal while a starving child stares at him. “Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude,” the boy says. “But I haven’t eaten since you killed USAID.”

Again tagging Elon Musk, Mark Ruffalo wrote, “This is how you are perceived. Not too late to course correct but it’s getting pretty late. You certainly have the extra money on hand to really help the people of the world instead of the hellbent road of chaos and destruction you are ludicrously barreling down.”

Yet it was Ruffalo’s own record that users on X were quick to point out.

Ruffalo’s Long-Running Feud With Musk

Ruffalo’s criticisms of Musk are not entirely new. In 2022, after Musk purchased Twitter, the actor urged him to get off social media and “get on with running Tesla and SpaceX. You are destroying your credibility. It’s just not a good look.”

Before the 2024 presidential election, when Musk came out in support of Donald Trump, Ruffalo called the tech mogul a “two-faced turncoat traitor.” Claiming that Musk had once been a “climate champion,” Ruffalo argued that “he sold himself out for a buck and some power. Don’t follow that guy. That guy doesn’t even have his original accent anymore. Don’t follow him. Don’t listen to him!”

A decade earlier, Ruffalo clearly felt very differently about Musk. In a video from 2014 that is currently gaining attention online, the actor can be seen praising Elon Musk’s Tesla and SolarCity products as essential to transitioning to 100% renewable energy and saving the planet.

Ruffalo specifically praised Musk for investing in the emerging technology and called on other millionaires, including Bill Gates and Bono, to do the same.

The Internet Remembers Ruffalo’s Praise

Mark Ruffalo is currently attempting to draw attention to environmental, social, entertainment industry, and political issues. However, much of the online conversation has instead focused on his reversal from praising Elon Musk in 2014 to calling him a “monster” today.

Meanwhile, the actor is set to appear in two of the year’s biggest Marvel films. In just two weeks, Ruffalo will portray Bruce Banner/The Hulk in Spider-Man: Brand New Day before returning at the end of the year in Avengers: Doomsday.

Yet rather than promoting upcoming projects designed to appeal to a broad audience, Ruffalo continues to cultivate a polarizing public persona through his political activism.
