Stranger Things may have concluded its five-season run, but Netflix isn’t finished exploring the supernatural mysteries that made the series a global phenomenon.
On November 6, the streaming giant surprised fans with the first teaser trailer for Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a live-action prequel set in 1955. According to Variety, the project, first discussed in 2022, has officially received a series order. It marks the franchise’s fourth major installment, following the original series, an animated spinoff, and a stage production.
Rather than returning to Hawkins, Indiana, the prequel will take viewers to the fictional town of Marion, Nevada. The series is scheduled to premiere in 2028, although Netflix has not announced a specific release date.

The announcement comes amid significant changes at Netflix, including the elimination of approximately 1,000 jobs in October.
With competition for viewers’ attention and subscription dollars intensifying, Netflix appears to be leaning on one of its most successful franchises. However, following the divisive conclusion to Stranger Things, the company may face an additional challenge: winning back fans disappointed by the original show’s ending.
Netflix Reveals a Mysterious New Setting
Netflix unveiled the prequel on social media with a brief teaser that establishes its setting.

The footage opens with an abandoned bicycle beside a radio playing the 1950s hit “Sh-Boom.” A nearby warning sign indicates that the bicycle has been left in a restricted area.
As the camera turns toward an ominous sky, the location and date appear on screen: April 19, 1955, Marion, Nevada.
Suddenly, lightning tears through the clouds, suggesting that something extraordinary is happening above the desert.

The teaser concludes with the series title and a 2028 release window.
Netflix accompanied the announcement with the tagline, “Before Hawkins, there was Marion.”
Although the footage reveals nothing about the characters, the Nevada setting could connect to mysteries involving Henry Creel, who eventually became the villainous Vecna.
The Duffer Brothers have indicated that the prequel will address unanswered questions surrounding a mysterious rock discovered in Nevada. However, they have emphasized that the series will establish its own mythology rather than simply revisit the origins of the Mind Flayer.
The Duffer Brothers Return With a New Creative Team
According to Netflix’s official announcement, Matt and Ross Duffer are developing the prequel alongside longtime collaborator Kate Trefry, who will serve as showrunner, co-creator, and writer.
The Duffer Brothers expressed their enthusiasm for bringing the project to life.

“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating,” they said.
The brothers also promised a different experience from the original series, with a new setting and unfamiliar heroes and villains.
Production will take place in New Mexico. Netflix has not announced the cast, and the Duffer Brothers indicated that casting is still ahead.
The Prequel Follows a Divisive Series Finale
The announcement arrives less than a year after Stranger Things concluded with a finale that sparked considerable controversy among fans.
As previously reported, some viewers became convinced that the final episode was not the show’s actual conclusion.
A viral theory known as “Conformity Gate” suggested that the ending was an illusion created by Vecna and that Netflix was preparing to release a secret ninth episode.

Fans searched for clues across social media and returned to Netflix expecting another installment. Reports of service disruptions accompanied the frenzy, although Netflix did not confirm that traffic associated with the theory caused the technical problems.
The rumored episode never materialized.
The controversy highlighted both the franchise’s enduring popularity and the dissatisfaction among some viewers with how the story concluded.
According to GamesRadar+, some fans initially believed Netflix’s November 6 promotional activity was teasing the long-rumored ninth episode rather than announcing a prequel.
Instead of revisiting the original show’s ending, Netflix is moving forward with a new story set decades before the events in Hawkins.
Netflix Expands Stranger Things Despite Recent Layoffs
The prequel also arrives as Netflix undergoes significant restructuring, including approximately 1,000 job cuts announced in October.
Those reductions come amid growing competition from streaming rivals and free platforms such as YouTube. Against that backdrop, established franchises like Stranger Things remain valuable to Netflix.
According to the company, the original show’s first four seasons generated more than 1.2 billion views. Netflix has since expanded the property through stage productions, animation, and immersive attractions.
Other Worlds offers another opportunity to capitalize on that popularity. However, its new cast and setting will have to win over audiences without the familiar Hawkins ensemble.
Whether the prequel can recapture the original show’s appeal remains to be seen when Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure premieres in 2028.
