Shortly after his headlining performance at the Super Bowl halftime show, musician Bad Bunny wiped his Instagram account. Bad Bunny’s 52.4 million followers found his feed completely blank, with no posts, videos, or even a profile picture. The only remaining content is a link to find his music and tour dates.

Many are interpreting the move as a reaction to the continued fallout from one of the most divisive cultural moments in recent history.
A Controversy Before the Halftime Show
From the moment Bad Bunny was announced as the Super Bowl halftime performer, the decision sparked heated debate — a situation he fueled. On SNL, the Puerto Rican singer suggested that his entire set would be in Spanish, and told Americans who didn’t speak the language “you have four months to learn.”

The singer continued to draw fire in the days leading up to the Big Game. A week before his performance, Bad Bunny won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year. In his acceptance speech, he said, “We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens, we are humans, and we are Americans.” Viewership for the awards ceremony was down one million viewers from the previous year. Some commentators suggested this may have been due to anticipated political statements.
The backlash to Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show performance was immediate. President Donald Trump took to Truth Social and said the show was “absolutely terrible” and failed to represent American cultural standards of success, creativity, and excellence. As promised, Bad Bunny sang in Spanish, prompting Trump to claim that “nobody understands a word this guy is saying.”
Trump’s comments amplified an already heated conversation around what has traditionally been a unifying pop-culture moment. But rather than using Instagram or another social media platform to respond to the backlash, Bad Bunny has seemingly retreated from online discourse entirely.
Many Americans reacted to Bad Bunny’s halftime show differently—by watching something else.
A Rival Halftime Event Draws Viewers
Turning Point USA announced in October that it would offer an event to rival the NFL’s official halftime show. Even before the acts were announced, “The All-American Halftime Show” generated considerable buzz online. The lineup ultimately included Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Gabby Barrett, and Lee Brice, for what TPUSA promised would be a celebration of “faith, family, and freedom.”
According to Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet, “The All-American Halftime Show pulled in OVER 25 MILLION views on just YouTube and Rumble alone, with a lot of large groups watching together, so the number of viewers is likely far higher. And the numbers are still climbing (broadcast partners, fast channel partners, and final counts incoming).”

The massive viewership numbers—which are still climbing in replays—have sent a clear message about the kind of entertainment millions of Americans prefer. Yet by wiping his social media presence, Bad Bunny has suddenly removed himself from the online conversation. It means he can’t thank those who praised his performance or the NFL for giving him the opportunity. But it also means that he won’t face comparisons to the TPUSA event in the comments.
Whether wiping his Instagram account is a marketing stunt in the lead-up to a new album (which Bad Bunny did in 2023), or a tactical retreat in the face of tremendous criticism, is unknown. Unless Bad Bunny makes a statement, his reasoning will likely remain unclear. For now, the silence itself has become the statement—one that says as much about the moment as the music ever could.
