American icon Dolly Parton has officially entered the travel center business, and she is not pretending she doesn’t know who the competition is.

At the June 24 grand opening of Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop, Parton joked that her new roadside destination exists because she “couldn’t leave it to beavers.” It was a playful but unmistakable reference to Buc-ee’s iconic beaver mascot, as well as the famously wholesome television series Leave It to Beaver.
From Local Truck Stop to Regional Brand
While the Tennessean Travel Stop was already an established location, its partnership with Dolly Parton was announced last April. At the time, the partners said the “first rebranded location will serve as both a proof of concept and flagship for future sites planned under the Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stops banner. Additional locations across Tennessee and beyond are set to be announced in 2026.”

The travel center sits just off Interstate 65 at Exit 22 in Cornersville, roughly an hour south of Nashville. In addition to fuel pumps, it features a barbecue restaurant, a “Cup of Ambition” coffee shop inspired by Parton’s hit song 9 to 5, live music, a dog park, event space, electric vehicle charging stations, and an extensive collection of Dolly-themed merchandise.
The project was developed in partnership with Parton’s longtime manager, Danny Nozell, and Tennessean Travel Stop owner Gregory H. Sachs. According to the partners, the goal was to create a destination that reflects Tennessee hospitality while serving truck drivers, families, and road-trippers alike.
Dolly Makes a Surprise Appearance
Early reports indicated that the country music legend would not attend the grand opening, making her appearance a surprise. It also marked one of Parton’s highest-profile public outings in months.
The 80-year-old entertainer canceled her planned Las Vegas residency in May as she continued recovering from health issues affecting her immune and digestive systems. In a message to fans, she said she was responding well to treatment but needed more time before returning to the stage.

“Now the bad news is, it’s gonna take me a little while before I’m ready to be up to stage-performance level, because some of the meds and treatments make me a little bit swimmy-headed,” she wrote.
Yet at the grand opening, Parton appeared to be her energetic self.
“I’m sure some of you are wondering why I wanted a truck stop,” Parton told attendees during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Well, I couldn’t leave it to beavers. I just had to throw my scrawny little self in there.” However, she went on to clarify that the new venture is not intended to compete directly with Buc-ee’s.
“We’re not trying to compete with anybody. We don’t think we’ll have to.”
Can Dolly Compete With Buc-ee’s?
Meanwhile, Buc-ee’s has been enjoying a surge of international attention as visitors traveling to the United States for the FIFA World Cup have discovered the chain’s enormous travel centers. The Texas-based company has also announced plans to open 15 new locations over the next three years, continuing its rapid nationwide expansion.

Whether Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop ultimately grows into a regional chain capable of challenging Buc-ee’s remains to be seen. But by invoking the famous beaver on opening day, Parton made one thing clear: she intends for travelers to think of her destination the next time they hit the open road.
