Disney’s long-gestating live-action Gargoyles series will not be taking flight after all.

Series creator Greg Weisman has confirmed that the planned Disney+ adaptation is dead nearly three years after the project was first announced.

“Well, I know the live-action side of it is, uh, the Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead,” Weisman told ComicsOnline during an interview at Fan Expo Chicago.

“I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action,” he added.

Although Weisman was not directly involved with the project, Variety later confirmed that the reboot had been shelved. The confirmation ends years of speculation surrounding the adaptation, which generated considerable excitement but never advanced beyond the development stage.

Disney has not issued an official statement explaining the decision.

Disney Announced Gargoyles Reboot in 2023

The live-action adaptation was first reported in October 2023, with James Wan’s Atomic Monster developing the series for Disney+.

Gary Dauberman was attached to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner. He previously worked with Wan on several installments in The Conjuring franchise and wrote both chapters of Andy Muschietti’s It adaptation.

The proposed series would have centered on Goliath, described in an early logline as the last surviving member of a heroic race of gargoyle warriors. After awakening in modern-day New York City, he would have protected the city alongside a police detective.

The premise represented a significant departure from the original animated series, which followed an entire clan of gargoyles rather than Goliath alone. That approach could have reduced production costs, but it also risked alienating longtime fans who consider the Manhattan Clan essential to the franchise’s appeal.

Nevertheless, Dauberman indicated as recently as 2025 that development remained active. He also promised that the adaptation would retain the animated series’ darker elements.

However, Disney+ never formally ordered the project to series, announced a cast, or revealed a prospective release date.

Disney Reassesses Its Streaming Strategy

The news comes as Disney appears to be reassessing its approach to streaming series.

Despite reports that new Marvel shows are in development for Disney+, no announcements were made at the recent D23 Expo. After initially renewing Wonder Man for a second season, the studio later canceled it. Following next month’s VisionQuest and next year’s third season of Daredevil: Born Again, no additional live-action MCU projects are currently scheduled.

Star Wars is similarly in a holding pattern. There are reportedly no additional live-action series, such as another season of The Mandalorian, currently in development. The delayed second season of Ahsoka is in post-production and scheduled to arrive sometime in 2027.

A live-action Gargoyles series—even with fewer CGI characters than the animated original—may have represented an expensive gamble. Although the 1990s animated series retains a cult following and nostalgia remains popular in Hollywood, executives may not have been convinced that the reboot would attract a sufficiently large audience.

While many users online expressed disappointment that the live-action reboot is no longer moving forward, others suggested that it may be for the best. For now, fans will have to look to the original animated series and ongoing comic books for new adventures involving Goliath and his clan.
