Marvel Studios has canceled the second season of Wonder Man, reversing its decision to renew the Disney+ series only four months after announcing its return.

According to Variety, Marvel and Disney have abandoned plans for Wonder Man Season 2 despite previously securing the involvement of stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley. Although the series will not continue, its characters could still appear elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel officially announced Wonder Man Season 2 in March, approximately two months after all eight episodes premiered on Disney+. The renewal came as something of a surprise. Although Wonder Man received strong reviews from mainstream critics and audiences, overall engagement remained relatively low. Even with the entire season available at launch, its viewership failed to match several other Marvel shows. Disney later made Wonder Man available on Hulu for a limited time and uploaded the premiere episode to YouTube.

Most Marvel shows on Disney+ have been treated as limited-series events. Now, it appears that Wonder Man will follow the established pattern.

Strong Reviews Were Not Enough

Wonder Man followed aspiring actor Simon Williams, who concealed his superhuman abilities while auditioning for a reboot of his favorite superhero film. Kingsley reprised his role as Trevor Slattery, the failed actor who impersonated the Mandarin in Iron Man 3.

The show’s satirical approach to Hollywood distinguished it from Marvel’s more conventional superhero projects. At the same time, fans of the original comics criticized the series for bearing little resemblance to its source material beyond the name and a handful of character details.

Abdul-Mateen, who received an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Simon, addressed the cancellation on Instagram. The actor thanked viewers who watched, enjoyed, and promoted the series.

“The show worked,” the actor wrote, adding that he was proud to have participated in “something cool.” He concluded his message by telling fans, “See you at the Emmys.”

His upbeat response stands in sharp contrast to comments from other Marvel stars whose Disney+ projects were not renewed or whose characters have been left without clear futures.

Wonder Man Season 2 Was Already Taking Shape

Showrunner Andrew Guest later revealed that preparations had advanced considerably further than initially reported. He denied speculation that scheduling conflicts involving co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton or the cast had contributed to the decision. He also dismissed theories that the cancellation was a marketing stunt or that Marvel intended to replace the series with a movie.

“Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared,” Guest said in a video posted to TikTok. The writers’ room was scheduled to open in August, with production expected to begin early next year.

Guest had already written the Wonder Man Season 2 premiere and developed an outline for the remaining episodes. He said the creative team believed the proposed season could surpass the first.

Nevertheless, Disney and Marvel abruptly concluded that continuing the series “didn’t make sense for them—even though a few months ago it did.”

Low Viewership May Explain Marvel’s Reversal

Marvel has not publicly provided a specific explanation for reversing course on Wonder Man Season 2. However, according to Luminate, the series generated approximately 549.6 million viewing minutes during its first 10 days. Because all eight episodes were immediately available, that total compared poorly with several Marvel shows that launched with substantially less content.

By its second week, the series had dropped out of Nielsen’s top 10.

Ultimately, the biggest surprise is not that Wonder Man will not return for Season 2. Considering its limited viewership and Marvel’s history of producing one-season Disney+ shows, the greater surprise is that the studio ever appeared committed to making another season.
