Amazon has officially revealed the first promotional image for its upcoming God of War series, and early fan reaction is already sharply divided.

The image, shared on social media by Variety, gives audiences their first look at Ryan Hurst as Kratos alongside Callum Vinson as Atreus as production begins in Vancouver. The live-action adaptation will reportedly follow the storyline of the two most recent God of War games, focusing on Kratos’ journey raising his son while navigating the Norse pantheon.

But while some fans praised the apparent game accuracy, many others were far less impressed by what they saw.

First Look Sparks Immediate Debate

The newly released photo attempts to recreate the now-iconic dynamic between Kratos and Atreus from the modern God of War titles. Hurst appears heavily made up to match Kratos’ distinctive look, complete with the character’s pale skin and red markings.

However, the execution has quickly become a point of contention online.

Some viewers felt the image successfully captured the spirit of the games, while others argued the promotional still looked overly processed — or worse, unintentionally comedic.

Social Media Reaction Trends Negative

Reaction to the God of War series reveal on social media has been notably mixed, with early sentiment leaning critical in many threads.

One user, @THighgate11, wrote: “Hyped for the show overall but this image looks like a spoof movie. Terrible first impression”

Another commenter questioned the visual presentation of the lead actor.

“This is a shame,” @ColinJMacLeod said. “Give Hurst some time to hit the gym. This photo looks painted over so much that it’s going to be mistaken for AI.”

Others were even more blunt in their assessment of the tone conveyed by the image.

Still, not all responses were negative.

Some fans defended the adaptation and praised the apparent faithfulness to the source material.

High Expectations for a Beloved Franchise

The mixed response demonstrates just how closely fans are watching Amazon’s God of War series, which carries significant expectations given the massive success of Sony’s games.

The Norse-era titles — particularly God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök — are widely regarded as some of the most acclaimed entries in PlayStation’s library. Translating that cinematic experience into live action was always going to be a high-wire act.

Ronald D. Moore is attached as writer and showrunner, with the series already receiving a two-season order from Amazon. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.

Early Optics Matter

First-look images rarely tell the full story of a production, but they often shape early public perception — and in this case, the reaction has clearly been split.

If Amazon was hoping for universal hype out of the gate, the God of War series may already be facing an uphill climb with portions of the fanbase. That said, with production only just underway, the final verdict will ultimately depend on how the finished show performs when it finally reaches Prime Video.

For now, the message from fans is clear: expectations for Kratos’ live-action debut remain sky-high — and scrutiny will be relentless.

Just like Sophies Croft…theres no aura or presence to his Krato’s. Looks like s dude doing cosplay.

See how Heath Ledger changed minds after the backlash when he was cast as Joker.

Nolan released one picture of Heath in the make up and it said everything about what to expect and it was just a shot of his face. Yet it had aura, menace and made you wonder what the rest would look like.

Thats how you convince people.
