Hollywood simply cannot quit Donald Trump. At a time when Disney and Marvel Studios desperately need Avengers: Doomsday to be a massive box office success, veteran actor Sir Ian McKellen has decided to spend part of the film’s promotional cycle talking about President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and how he imagined destroying it while filming the movie.

According to comments McKellen made during an appearance at Rome’s Cinema in Piazza festival, the actor recalled being directed by the Russo Brothers to make Magneto appear more furious while filming a destruction sequence for Avengers: Doomsday.

[They told me to] make it look as if you hate what you’re destroying,” McKellen explained. “So I stood there and I shouted: ‘Mar-a-Lago!'”

Variety framed the moment as McKellen “roasting” Trump. But many Americans are likely to see something far less amusing.

A Strange Joke Given Recent History

The comments arrive in an environment where President Trump has already faced multiple assassination attempts and security threats during recent election cycles and his return to office.

To be clear, McKellen did not say he wanted to harm Trump personally. What he described was imagining the destruction of Mar-a-Lago, the Florida property most closely associated with the president, in order to fuel a scene in which Magneto is destroying something on screen.

Even so, it raises obvious questions about judgment.

When public figures spend years warning about political rhetoric and the dangers of violent language, then turn around and joke about mentally destroying a sitting president’s most famous property, critics are inevitably going to point out the contradiction.

Had a major celebrity associated with a blockbuster franchise joked about imagining the destruction of a property closely linked to a Democrat president, it’s difficult to imagine the entertainment press treating the story as a harmless punchline.

Why Is Everything About Trump?

Perhaps the more revealing aspect of the story is Hollywood’s continued obsession with Trump.

The president has become such a fixation for many entertainment figures that even discussions about a Marvel superhero movie somehow circle back to him.

McKellen wasn’t promoting a political documentary. He wasn’t appearing at a campaign rally. He was discussing a massive Disney superhero film expected to be one of the biggest movies of the year.

Yet Trump still found his way into the conversation.

That inability to separate entertainment from politics has become one of Hollywood’s defining characteristics over the last decade. Time and again, actors, directors, and writers insert contemporary political grievances into discussions that have little or nothing to do with politics.

The result is often audience fatigue.

Millions of moviegoers go to theaters specifically to escape politics for a few hours. They are looking for adventure, comedy, action, fantasy, or science fiction—not another reminder of America’s endless political battles.

Is This Helping ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?

That’s where the larger problem for Disney emerges.

Avengers: Doomsday is not a small independent film that can afford to appeal to a niche audience. It’s one of the most expensive productions Disney has ever mounted and carries enormous expectations for Marvel Studios.

Following a series of box office disappointments and declining audience enthusiasm for parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney needs broad support from moviegoers across the political spectrum.

Instead, one of the film’s highest-profile cast members is now helping create a public association between Avengers: Doomsday and anti-Trump commentary.

Whether that association is fair or not is almost beside the point.

The reality is that audiences increasingly view entertainment through a political lens, often because Hollywood figures themselves insist on framing it that way. Every time an actor turns a movie promotion into a political statement, they risk narrowing the potential audience.

McKellen’s comments may have earned laughs from a friendly crowd in Rome. But Disney executives are unlikely to be thrilled that one of their biggest upcoming films is generating headlines about Trump, Mar-a-Lago, and political grievances rather than excitement for the movie itself.

For a studio already under pressure to prove Marvel can still unite audiences, that’s the last conversation they should want surrounding Avengers: Doomsday.
