Voice actor Yuri Lowenthal refuted the claim that Miles Morales will become the new mainline Spider-Man in Insomniac Games’ Marvel Spider-Man games.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the game ends with a conversation between Morales and Peter Parker to which Parker informs Morales, “I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something … I just haven’t been talking to you about what I should have been talking to you…”

Morales responds, “Pete, I got this. All of it. Go be Peter Parker for awhile.” When Parker questions if he’s sure, Morales responds, “I can handle it. As long as I can still call you for advice.”

Parker then responds, “You don’t need it.” He then embaaces him in a hug.

In an interview with Gizmodo, the outlet’s Justin Carter asked Insomniac Games’ advanced writer Brittney Morris and narrative director Ben Arfmann, “You said earlier you basically knew right away that you wanted playable Venom. Does that also apply to ending this game with Miles as the ‘main’ Spider-Man from now on?”

Morris responded, “It always felt very natural, and I think we all collectively thought it would happen. To me, it shows a great deal of evolution from Miles; at the beginning of the game, we see him struggling to figure out what he wants to do with his life. By the end, we had Miles carrying the burden of saving the city, and also carrying Pete when Pete wasn’t strong enough to carry himself at various points.”

“That’s what’s been so cool about writing a story about two Spider-Men: they’re both strong, and one of them can be strong when the other is not,” she added. “By the end, Miles is more confident and he’s like, “Yeah, I got this. How much worse can things get after what we just went through?”

Arfmann shared his thoughts as well, “To echo what Brittney said: the idea of a two Spider-Man story was always really essential to this game. I think pretty early on, we knew that we wanted to have that moment of handing the reins over. And as we developed it, as we started to lay down more track leading up to that moment, it just felt more and more right.”

“I think it was Jon who wrote that scene in Aunt May’s garage, and it’s one of my favorite scenes,” he said. “The way that Miles intuits exactly what Pete is thinking and stops him from stumbling through trying to hand over the mask. Miles going, ‘You know I got this, bro,’ it’s such a great moment between the two of them. And it felt like such a natural conclusion; I’m not sure when specifically we decided to do that, but it always felt like the only way the game could end.”

Now, Yuri Lowenthal is indicating this might not be the case moving forward. Speaking with Variety’s Katcy Stephan, he was asked, “At the end of “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” there’s an implication that Miles will take over the mantle as the primary Spidey, seemingly representing the end of Peter’s journey. How did you feel recording those final scenes, and what do you think about what this means for Peter in future games?”

Lowenthal responded, “There have been some comments recently that were picked up to infer that that Peter’s out and Miles is in. While I think that Peter would love to believe that he can just turn it off and not be Spider-Man anymore and live a completely normal life, I don’t think that’s what’s going to happen now.”

He elaborated, “I don’t know — I haven’t read a script yet. They’re probably still working on it. But I don’t think that’s the last we’re gonna see Peter. I think it’s a cool place to leave it. It’s a cool change for him.”

“I think 100% he trusts Miles,” he continued. “Miles has really stepped up and he’s like, ‘Oh, maybe I can get a little break.’ And I did get a vacation to Symkaria during the Miles game. Not much of vacation, but at least at least MJ got to learn to ride a motorcycle, which is awesome.”

Lowenthal’s comments come in the wake of sales data showing that the standalone Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales game sold more than 50% less than the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game.

The sales data, which was leaked to ResetEra shows that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which was released in 2020, only sold a total of 11.125 million copies with net sales totaling $427 million.

In comparison, Marvel’s Spider-Man, which was released in 2018, sold 22.685 million units and net sales totaled $827 million.

Sony also recently announced that Insomniac Games will be significantly impacted as part of its massive restructuring at PlayStation and Sony Interactive Entertainment that will see approximately 900 employees fired or roughly 8% of the company’s entire global workforce.

Head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst stated there would be reductions at “Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, as well as our Technology, Creative, and Support teams.”

Interestingly, he seemed to affirm that the PlayStation 5 hardware is the main reason the restructuring and layoffs are taking place, “PlayStation 5 is in its fourth year, and we are at a stage where we need to step back and look at what our business needs.”

He later added, “Delivering and sustaining social, online experiences – allowing PlayStation gamers to explore our worlds in different ways – as well as launching games on additional devices such as PC and Mobile, requires a different approach and different resources.”
