With the final trailer for Masters of the Universe, Amazon MGM Studios appears to be leaning into what fans appreciate most: the character’s history and heroic action.

While earlier previews emphasized the film’s humor and teased epic battles, some fans felt they fell short of promising a faithful adaptation of He-Man’s adventures. There were also concerns that director Travis Knight would not fully embrace the story’s epic fantasy potential.

This final trailer for Masters of the Universe may put some of those fears to rest.

A More Faithful Look at He-Man

The trailer opens by establishing He-Man’s 40-year history as a pop culture mainstay and includes a clip from the classic cartoon. It then shifts to a young Prince Adam approaching the magic sword as his mother guides him through what to say when he lifts it. Title cards emphasize how He-Man inspired a generation.

Rather than teasing the moment Prince Adam transforms into He-Man, the trailer reveals it immediately. It then quickly cuts to He-Man battling through a room full of enemies with dynamic sound design. The sword rings as it strikes armor, while He-Man’s kicks and punches land with heavy impact.

Skeletor in Masters of the Universe

Audiences also get their first truly clear sense of Jared Leto’s performance as Skeletor. “It seems the prodigal prince has returned,” he says in mocking tones. In a more menacing moment, he declares, “I am a devil. But I mean to be a god.”

Heroism, Humor, and Fan Service

In the next section of the final Masters of the Universe trailer, Prince Adam questions what he is supposed to do. A female voice responds, “You are he who will restore peace to Eternia.” The following moments show Prince Adam committing to the coming battle and assembling his team. Fans will likely be excited to see Mekaneck, Ram Man, and Fisto appear together on screen.

However, the film’s marketing does not shy away from moments of levity. Mekaneck struggles to get Prince Adam’s name right, and the trailer includes a hint of suggestive humor. More importantly for some viewers, one scene shows He-Man lifting a crashed spaceship with one arm while Teela becomes visibly flustered. At a time when many audiences feel masculine heroes are often diminished in favor of female protagonists, some may find the exchange refreshing.

Controversy Still Lingers Around the Film

Comments from director Travis Knight and Teela actress Camila Mendes using the phrase “toxic masculinity” in reference to the themes in Masters of the Universe sparked intense backlash online.

Those concerns were amplified by an early social media reaction claiming the film “struggles to find its footing in the first half, but once it locks on its themes of fragile masculinity and ego, it makes way for an incredibly fun time that’s also visually stimulating. Nicholas Galitzine is great!”

None of that is apparent in the final trailer. However, the comments may still lead skeptical fans to wait for reviews on Criticless and reactions across social media before deciding whether to see the film. Since Masters of the Universe arrives in theaters on June 5, they will not have long to wait.
