PlayStation is preparing to showcase its upcoming slate of games during two State of Play presentations later this week.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the broadcasts will begin Thursday, September 3, at 6 a.m. Pacific Time and 9 a.m. Eastern Time. Fans can watch both presentations live on PlayStation’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.

Although Sony has held separate Japanese State of Play events in the past, this marks the first time one will immediately follow the primary presentation. That may explain the unusually early start time for viewers in the Eastern Time Zone.

The first State of Play will feature announcements and updates from PlayStation Studios and Sony’s third-party publishing partners. Although the company has not revealed the full lineup, it confirmed that the presentation will conclude with an extended look at Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

“State of Play returns Thursday, September 3 with two broadcasts airing back-to-back,” Sony wrote. “First, tune in for a new State of Play featuring updates and announcements from PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners, concluding with an extended look at the vast world of Final Fantasy VII Revelation.”

Final Fantasy VII Revelation Takes Center Stage

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final installment in Square Enix’s ambitious remake trilogy. It will continue the story established in 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake and 2024’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. For many gamers, it is arguably one of the most anticipated releases of spring 2027.

Square Enix unveiled the game earlier this year. Unlike the previous two installments, Revelation is expected to launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. That said, the franchise remains closely associated with PlayStation.

The upcoming footage could provide fans with a closer look at the game’s expanded world, playable characters, and story. However, Sony stopped short of revealing exactly what Square Enix intends to show.

State of Play Japan Will Immediately Follow

Once the primary presentation ends, PlayStation will transition directly into a new episode of State of Play Japan. Voice actor Yuki Kaji will return as host.

The second broadcast will focus specifically on games from studios throughout Japan and other parts of Asia. Sony has promised deeper looks at upcoming titles, new gameplay footage, and additional announcements.

The main State of Play will air in English with Japanese subtitles. Conversely, State of Play Japan will be presented in Japanese with English subtitles.

Physical-Media Backlash Follows PlayStation

The unusual double presentation comes as Sony continues facing pressure from customers over its plans to abandon physical game releases.

Sony previously announced that games released for PlayStation consoles beginning in January 2028 will be distributed exclusively in digital formats. The decision continues to spark backlash beneath nearly every Sony announcement. A July YouTube trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine on the PS5 was flooded with demands that the company preserve physical media.

Nearly every response to Sony’s X post announcing the upcoming State of Play also reflected gamers’ “No Disc, No Buy” attitude.

Therefore, Sony may find it difficult to separate enthusiasm for its upcoming releases from the growing controversy surrounding how those games will be sold.

Nevertheless, the promise of an extended Final Fantasy VII Revelation presentation gives fans of the franchise a compelling reason to tune in Thursday. Whether PlayStation offers any response to its physical-media critics remains to be seen.
